On Air with Ryan Seacrest 2010-08-10
Mark Salling
Mark was on to announce his record deal — an album of songs that he’s written, performed and produced himself. Ryan had the world premiere of one of his tracks “Higher Power”, which is reminiscent in parts of Cake’s version of the Gloria Gaynor classic I Will Survive. Mark picked Higher Power as one of the more pop and upbeat tracks off his album, and thought it was a trip to hear it on the radio. If you want to listen to it, it’s on Ryan’s website: Mark Selling debuts Higher Power. Mark’s album Pipe Dreams is out October 12th. Ryan also quizzed Mark on his love life and a comment he’d made to Teen Vogue about being worse than Puck.
Ryan Murphy
Ryan was showing Glee a lot of love today with both Mark Salling and Ryan Murphy, its creator. Ryan M cleared up a few rumours, including the Michael Jackson episode (not cleared), Paul McCartney sending him tracks to use (true!), and the sad news that Mr Schue won’t be shaving his head as part of the Britney Spears episode … but Britney herself is 100% going to appear! The way he described the episode with the cast having fantasies about how they could be Britney made it sound like it’s going to be a lot of fun. My Britney-Glee fantasy is to see Kurt reenact this video:
Ryan M was also on to talk about Eat, Pray, Love — the movie Ryan tweeted about watching that’s released in the US this Friday. Apparently the book’s all the rage and people are really looking forward to the movie. I can’t say it sounds like the sort of thing I’d watch willingly, but Ryan Murphy’s description of how he came to direct the movie was an interesting story.
Ryan Murphy also said he and Ryan have known each other a long time and have always said they would work together. Hasn’t he heard Ryan’s gift of song? He’d be perfect for Glee …
Jeff Lewis
I have no idea who Jeff Lewis is or what Flipping Out is, but Jeff won me over from the start when he said Eat, Pray, Love sounds like a snooze fest! Ryan asked Jeff about his OCD, which he said is getting worse then they talked about kitchen design, antidepressants and compared the effect of alcohol on their sex drive. Jeff talked about his hate mail, adding that he’d been sent some naked photos … which he’s going to forward to Ellen! Jeff said one of the pictures looks like Ellen and she was right back with “you know I’m a fan!”
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian called into the studio at one point, though Ryan joked about it being George Lopez who dressed up as a Kardashian and did not look good as a woman! Ryan wanted to tweet out a photo of Kim’s glasses, but Kim wasn’t having any of the photos he took. She later tweeted out her own.
Coffee lids
When Ryan was in NYC for New Jersey Idol auditions, he and Ellen talked about the flat coffee cup lids they have there. Someone called in to talk about coffee lids and Ryan admitted that he takes the lid off his coffee and puts it on the dirty germ-ridden counter while he adds his Splenda. That’s kinda gross, but he’s probably at more risk from the artificial sweetener!
Jayson’s tattoo
This was so funny I don’t think I even tweeted it because I couldn’t do it justice in 140 characters. You really need to hear it but I can’t post the audio until tomrrow. Ryan described a scene of Sadao kneeling down before Jayson with his leg rolled up while he photographed Jayson’s new platypus tattoo which was comical, but Ellen’s comments made the whole thing hilarious. First she showed she has an active imagination when it comes to Sadao and Jayson, then she had apparently swallowed the Wikipedia entry for the Platypus, quoting its Latin name and throwing information at Ryan. It was too funny.
Added:
Ryan described seeing Sadao down on his knees as Jayson, his hair guy, pulled up his leg as he walked down the corridor. Ellen agreed that wasn’t something you see every day, though she has imagined it before …
Moving swiftly out of the recesses of Ellen’s mind, Ryan went on to explain that Sadao was photographing Jayson’s new tattoo and wondering why he’d have a platypus on his calf, while Ellen injected latin names and facts about the platypus and where you’d find it (other than on Jayson’s leg). It was one of the oddest — and funniest — conversations I’ve heard them have, ending in Ryan’s speculation about how the platypus came into being.
Stephen Slater’s emergency exit
Ryan talked about people walking out of work when they’ve just had enough, using Dennis as an example as he’d bailed once and had an aborted bail another time. He and Ellen described how Dennis went red, said ‘Okay, okay, okay … I’m leaving’, grabbed his backpack and marched out, then Dennis described what happened next. This led into the JetBlue flight attendant, Stephen Slater, who left the plane via the emergency exit from a JetBlue plane after losing his cool with a rude passenger who wouldn’t do as asked after landing. The story is funny, but Ellen’s retelling was classic! Is there a new writer in the house? Something’s got into Ellen recently and whatever it is, I like it!
