Ryan talked to Kara about the dynamic at the judges’ table now Ellen DeGeneres has replaced Paula Abdul. Kara is impressed by Ellen, calling her a natural judge and a good listener. She says it’s not comedy all the time as Ellen takes her role seriously, but when she says something funny, it’s really funny.

Kara had a run in with a guy on the auditions show that aired last night, so Ryan asked why she let some contestants get under her skin and summed up her explanation as it being about earning vs entitlement. Kara said that the biggest stars are the ones who work hardest, calling it the unwritten rule of success and taking Ryan as her example. Ryan agreed with her assessment that nobody works hard or is nicer than he is, so she added his humility to the list, comparing him to Simon.

On the subject of Simon, Kara was sad to hear that Simon is leaving and was also confused about the future of the show because he’s made it huge will be difficult to replace because not everyone can be funny and charming while being brutally honest. Saying nice things about Simon was clearly starting to get to Ryan, because he said that Simon’s let himself go a little bit after being on the air so long … then amended his comment to include himself as Kara asked him to confirm that he was saying the guys aren’t looking as hot as they did.

Kara called her first season style embarrassing, and Ellen said that Ryan is embarrassed about his first few seasons. He shouldn’t be — bring back the see-through blouse, I say! I wonder if Simon ever got an answer to the ‘matching panties’ question.

How hot is Simon Cowell

Simon’s hotness got another mention later in the show when Ryan and Ellen were talking about girls rating guys based on things other than looks. They put Simon as a 9, then Ryan amended it down a little because Simon’s put on holiday weight!
