Joel McHale
Ryan played clips from Joel’s shows The Soup and Community … both of which feature jokes about Ryan. Ryan talked about getting into bed at 8:30 the night before, texting people who have lives, having a cup of tea, then catching a teaser on E! about him being shorter than Verne Troyer. They are funny to listen to together and they sound very comfortable with their banter, though they really do string out the joke a bit.
David Duchovny
Mmmm is David Duchovny still hot? In the teaser, Ryan said David has a masters in poetry from Yale … and they have a lot in common. Ellen was not convinced, reminding Ryan that he didn’t go to an ivy league school or study poetry. In the interview, Ryan said he had started watching Californication and was hooked. David dryly thanked him for pointing out that this series was so much later than his success with The X Files, but said it’s satisfying to have been involved with two good shows in a lifetime. Ryan brought up their shaky beginnings, playing a clip of David being less than complimentary about Ryan and American Idol, which was slightly uncomfortable in a hilarious way. Ryan might have forgiven, but he’s not going to forget. That was definitely my favourite part of the interview.
Ryan and the Little Mermaid
After speaking to a caller who was worried about her 14-year-old daughter after reading her blog, Ryan said at that age he and his girlfriend spent a lot of time in the basement watching The Little Mermaid, which he claims was his younger sister’s film, over and over again.
Hmmm. On second thoughts, it doesn’t sound as though he watched much of it at all.
Ryan’s Glee insecurities
Ryan gave a shout out to the guys who listen to his show, saying “you gotta admit, listening to me is not nearly as embarrassing as watching Glee!” Ryan said he knows people love the show but if he put the show on he would have to close his curtains adding, “If someone drives by my house and they see Glee on the TV, Harvey Levin’s going to have a field day.” So there’s the scoop … if you drive past Ryan’s house and the curtains are closed, he’s watching Glee.
