Pre-Oscar magazine launch party

Posted by alice on Fri, 25 Feb 2011

From the LA times: Ryan was at a party last night for the launch of a new men’s magazine called Treats!

With his usual deadpan comedic confidence, Seacrest proclaimed that the suave, sexy black-and-white glamour of the magazine was based on his looks and style.

And who does he think will win the Oscar? “The King’s Speech.” Seacrest said he really liked that one.

Ryan and Simon miss each other

Posted by alice on Fri, 25 Feb 2011

Simon Cowell was on Ryan’s show to promote X Factor this morning, but Ryan pretended he didn’t want to talk about that … not that he’d even heard of it before! These two are so comical together. I vote we forget X Factor and Idol and use the time for the Ryan and Simon show instead.

They talked about Oscar parties … Simon’s been asked to so many, he doesn’t know which to attend … and Ryan asked Simon why he’s still working. It’s because he wants to help other people. It’s nothing to do with the money or world domination? Who knew! They also talked about X Factor auditions, the prize, judges (still undecided) and the host (not saying), and Ellen checked up on an old sleaze story about Simon importing beer (true!)

Idol 10: Las Vegas

Posted by alice on Thu, 24 Feb 2011

As Idol closes in on the final 24, the remaining 61 went to Vegas for their toughest challenge yet.

The contestants performed Beatles songs as a duo or trio. While the contestants practiced, with gentle criticism from the “Vocal Coach From Hell” (okay, make that not-so-gentle), Ryan lurked outside the rehearsal rooms looking pretty and building up the drama. Two things he does particularly well.

Also throwing a bit of honest criticism at the singers was Jimmy Iovine who told one group, “you ain’t gonna win singing that song,” and another, “that’s not what we’re looking for,” complete with throat cutting actions. I like him already.

After a trip to The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil, the contestants performed for the judges … with mixed results. There’s some outstanding talent this year, but a few Beatles songs were definitely hurt in the making of this show.

While the contestants performed, we got to see a bit more of Ryan as he talked backstage.

And nobody could accuse Idol of holding back on the drama as the contestants took what Ryan called “the longest walk of all” to the final judgement.

We saw five contestants make it to the final 24 and Jennifer struggle with her emotions as she had to tell the eliminated contestants that their journey was over.

The drama continues tonight as we find out the rest of the top 24.

Ryan, put her down.

Why are women's shower products so much nicer than men's? Most men's shower products feel like sandpaper3:42 PM Feb 18th

Last Friday Ryan talked about using women’s products in the shower, and while we thought his mind would have been on other things over the weekend (like reading the contents of that Live from the Red Carpet ring binder…), it seems he’s given the topic some serious consideration.

Ryan’s thought about it, he’s come up with manly names for his products, and now he needs to take a tour of other people’s showers and use their products. Ryan thinks men need some fun things to use in the shower (and Ellen could be just the woman to help if her suggestions are any indication!)

Ryan touring showers? That would make a great reality show! Shower with Seacrest: join Ryan as he showers his way around Los Angeles America the world. Product placement could take on a whole new meaning …

Idol 10: Hollywood week part 3

Posted by alice on Sat, 19 Feb 2011

The last day of Hollywood began with Ryan introducing the band and backing singers, while explaining that the contestants could choose to sing a cappella for their final shot on the final day of Hollywood week.

As the contestants took to the stage, Ryan reminded us what we knew about the contestants we’d already met, introduced a few new faces, and sympathised with the band.

Contestants were allowed to play their own instruments, but there’s always one who wants to be the Neil Armstrong of Hollywood Week.

Ryan’s driest line of the night followed one of the show’s dampest moments.

After the judges decided who would advance to Las Vegas and take on The Beatles, the contestants were split into four rooms. They weren’t expecting anyone to make a run for a different room as the security budget only stretched to Ryan armed with a mobile device.

61 contestants made it through to compete in Las Vegas where the judges will select the final 24.

Idol 10: Hollywood week part 2

Posted by alice on Thu, 17 Feb 2011

Hollywood Week continued with what Ryan promised would be the biggest challenge yet: groups. This is where people who want to sing solo are thrown together for the producers’ amusement, like a modern day Colosseum with fewer wild beasts, and we get to see just how horrible the performances are likely to be if there’s a group number on results day.

Ryan told us that 168 contestants made it through to group round over two days, adding that although the contestants who made it through on day one thought they’d got a head start, the evil overlords producers decreed that each group must contain a contestant from both days. The ensuing scramble to form new groups showed some contestants at their best and definitely brought out the worst in others.

While day two contestants found themselves in demand, Jersey girl Tiffany Rios discovered that letting people see how high maintenance you are before you get to group day is a Very Bad Idea as nobody wanted to work with her. Scotty McCreery also wandered around for a while trying to find a home, eventually joining up with über diva Clint Gamboa who wasn’t happy at having an extra member — a problem that was sorted by ditching Jacee Badeaux. Stomping on the baby-faced 15-year-old? There goes the mom vote! Jacee wandered around like a lost puppy for a while, and was eventually adopted and made welcome by Brett Loewenstern and his Sugar Mommas, who all had a lot of heart to go with their talent.

The Minors had their moms on hand for some honest feedback, something that didn’t sit well with James Durbin. After hearing the youngsters rehearse the same song as his group, James unleashed his secret weapon: screeching like a scalded cat at a frequency only The Minors could hear. It didn’t work; they totally schooled his group on stage. The uncomfortable exes added to the crazy by joining forces, along with the remaining half of the power couple. That was never going to end well. Also falling apart was Ashley Sullivan, who just wanted out. She took a break, had a chat with one of the puppet-masters, and came back hours later — and was welcomed back generously by her group. After being difficult about who to accept as the token day two contestant, Jordan Dorsey screwed over his group by switching to a different group late in the day.

Finally the drama ended so, after a bit of advice from the judges, it was time to enjoy the resulting train wrecks. Thirty nine groups sang and at first it seemed that the judges were just going to put everyone through, but just as Ryan suggested that the group day curse had been broken, things started to fall apart.

Ryan’s voice was ever-present, but we didn’t get to see him much. He did help one group with their props: a rockstar and a chair.

Ryan then watched from the side with a huge grin on his face as Steven enjoyed the attention of four girls, only one of whom made it through.

As the groups continued to show what they could do under pressure, Ryan’s narration kept the story flowing … and when we got the occasional welcome glimpse of Ryan, it looked as though he could reach down and pluck contestants off the stage.

Next up it’s solo performances and Ryan said the judges will make the deepest cuts of the season: “The final 100 enter the spotlight but only half will survive.” Tonight at 8 on Fox and tomorrow at 9 on ITV2 in the UK.

Red carpet drama

Chris Harrison was on to talk about the latest happenings on The Bachelor but he and Ryan also discussed a little issue that came up while they were both broadcasting live from the red carpet at The Grammys. Chris considers Ryan a friend, so when he saw Ryan hugging two other guys on the red carpet and then not give him any love at all — even though Chris thought their eyes had connected across a crowded red carpet — he felt a little snubbed.

Ryan explained that he’d gone to thank Billy Bush for saying nice things about a friend who was on his show recently, and was talking to Mario Lopez about a commercial … but before he got to Chris, E! needed him back and there was so much drama (and over-thinking) involved because he knew Chris was broadcasting live and one of the networks might have been pissed if Ryan walked in. But Chris just wanted a bro hug, damn it! was seeing the positives: Ryan could only have helped their ratings and a few of the big stars might have followed him down there!

Ryan sounded as though he had a definite spring in his step on the radio this morning, but he wasn’t giving a lot away about his Valentine’s Day evening. Ellen asked Ryan if he’s engaged. He said he was engaged … in the conversation … and talked about buying a diamond for a very special girl in his life. Ryan talked quite a bit about Valentine’s Day, but he was always out of time when it got to talking about his own evening. Funny that!

Ryan talks inches with Adam Lambert

Posted by alice on Sun, 13 Feb 2011

On the Grammys Red Carpet, Adam told Ryan a little about his next album:

I don’t have any idea what it’s going to sound like yet. I know that I want the vocals to be out in the centre; I want it to be genuine; I want it to be personal and honest. It might be a little less campy; less rhinestones and more leather.

However it ends up, it’s sure to sound amazing!

Idol 10: Hollywood week part 1

Posted by alice on Sun, 13 Feb 2011

The opening of Hollywood week had a bit of sci-fi feel with an echoey, almost ethereal, voiceover from Ryan over a spacey, haunting melody as we looked at the studio sky ceiling. Just as I started looking for the spaceship, the scene switched to Season 10’s aspiring stars who are ready to boldly go set forth on the “epic journey” Ryan called Hollywood week.

Ryan kicked things off telling us everything’s doubled: the number of contestants, the amount of talent, and — of course — the amount of drama.

The judges got together with Ryan for a quick huddle before they worked their way through the 327 contestants who made it through to Hollywood.

Brett Loewenster and Symphony Music Howlett were the first to make it through. As the judges deliberated, Ryan explained that half the contestants would leave today.

Going through: Rachel Zevita, Thia Megia, Casey Abrams. First to leave was the incredibly annoying Victoria Huggins, who butchered Julianne Hough’s My Hallelujah Song.

As the show continued to focus on contestants we’d already met, we saw Paris Tassin, James Durbin and Lauren Alaina make it through to the next round. Ryan reminded everyone that the one thing that hasn’t changed is the pressure, as Stormi Henley reached the end of the line.

Ryan congratulated Chris Medina and two other contestants who made it through to the group round. Jacee Badeaux, Robbie Rosen and Hollie Cavanagh also made it through, then Steve Beguhn, Sarah Sellers, Jacquelyn Dupree and Heidi Khzam were sent home.

With a full day and 160 contestants auditioned, Ryan checked in with those who’d face the judges on day two. There were a lot of nerves.

We finally met some new contestants, but they were all having a bad day: Stephanie Schimel, AJ Melendez, Sade Mitchell, David Cohen and James Ethan Clark all blew their only shot.

The producers decided it would be fun for the annoying “power couple” and the uncomfortable exes to room together. Rob Bolin and Chelsee Oaks both made it through to continue their awkwardness, but the judges pulled the plug on half of the power couple, keeping Jacqueline Dunford around and sending Nick Fink home. After the judges shut down his attempt to beg his way through to group day, Nick expressed his concerns over Ryan’s emotional state.

Scotty McCreery, Jackie Wilson and Jerome Bell repeated their audition songs, but made it through anyway. Tiffany Rios insulted her fellow contestants and sang badly, but the judges put her through. I guess that will make for some group day drama. Travis Orlando didn’t make it through, but through to group round are Clint Jun Gamboa, Julie Zorrilla, Naima Adedapo, Mark Gutierrez, Aaron Gutierrez, Molly DeWolf Swensen, Emily Anne Reed, Stefano Langone and Ashley Sullivan. 168 contestants made it through.

Jennifer Aniston called in to Ryan’s radio show yesterday. As well as talking about Jennifer’s current projects, they talked about a movie role Ryan didn’t take. Jennifer asked Ryan if he regretted turning it down. Ryan said he did … until he saw what they did to the actor’s face, but Jennifer thought Ryan could have added “character actor” to his résumé!

Ryan and Jennifer went on to talk about American Idol. Jennifer’s enjoying the changes, particularly Steven Tyler, adding that she prefers this season’s kinder, gentler way. Ryan also talked about his admiration for Jennifer’s jeans, which he thinks work well on a girl. Ryan told her he wants to have some girls’ jeans at his house, though he said “no” when Jennifer asked, “you want to wear my jeans?”

Idol 10: San Francisco recap

Idol 10: 7. San Francisco

Posted by alice on Thu, 10 Feb 2011

The show started with a clip that Nigel Lythgoe found so funny he laughed for 3 minutes … and recovered from that with a reminder from Ryan of the amazing talent they found last time the show auditioned in San Francisco.

The first contestant was a unique Ukranian … who could be just like anyone you wanted her to be. The judges didn’t see her quite the same way she sees herself. She didn’t want to chat with Ryan, but her confidence wasn’t knocked by rejection: “they will never see anything more beautiful.”

Idol zipped three half-decent golden ticket holders across the screen before its first attempt at tugging our heartstrings as a pretty guy who’d bounced back from a horrific accident made it through to Hollywood.

A karaoke host took a golden ticket, then three guys, including a human transformer, got a resounding “no.” A stream of girls made it to Hollywood but they weren’t even on screen long enough to show their names.

Next up was a stunning Colombian girl with sparkly shoes and a great voice. She sailed through — on her 20th birthday.

The next few contestants rubbed Steven up the wrong way, including a guy who butchered The Beatles and a girl in a cop costume who he thought ought to be arrested for her singing.

The episode ended on a high with two more making it through to Hollywood: a girl with a jazzy voice who was actually more interesting in the song she played after she scraped through and a guy whose range impressed all the judges.

It’s the end of the auditions — next stop Hollywood! There’s some great talent so far, and so many golden ticket holders we haven’t seen yet. Tonight at 8/7c on Fox and tomorrow at 9 on ITV2.

Idol 10: San Francisco auditions preview

Posted by alice on Wed, 9 Feb 2011

video: FoxBroadcasting, San Francisco preview #4

Ryan previewed tonight’s American Idol auditions with Nigel Lythgoe on his radio show this morning. He played a couple of clips from James Durbin’s audition. In the first, James gets emotional talking about some of the difficulties he’s had to overcome and what drives him to succeed now. Ryan said, “You will be in tears watching this back tonight on American Idol.” The second clip is of James singing one of Steven Tyler’s songs.

Ryan and Nigel talked about backstories. Nigel said they sometimes put contestants in there because they believe the backstory is interesting, but stressed they don’t make them up. Nigel also talked about the open to the show, which he said comes with a warning: if you don’t like crude British humour, don’t watch the first minute. I’ve watched the preview, and it’s schoolboy humour at its worst.

New Years Eve … the movie

Posted by alice on Sat, 5 Feb 2011

Ryan Seacrest in Times Square

Ellen brought up Ryan’s role in the New Year’s Eve during the sleaze on Friday. By the sound of the conversation he had with Amy, I think the director should be warned that Ryan may be planning a few changes to the script:

Amy: Are you playing Ryan Seacrest, the real you or the fake you?

Ryan: I’m playing me …

Amy: But are you going to have a girlfriend in this movie?

Ryan: Amy, I’m having a love scene in the movie!

Ellen: You are?

The best part is when Ryan says he doesn’t know why it’s so funny.

I think that sounds like a huge improvement on the scene everyone is expecting. And it’s what his public clearly wants … “Ryan Seacrest shirtless” is in the top ten searches on this site!!

Ryan talks Nana's 9-layer dip

Posted by alice on Sat, 5 Feb 2011

Ryan called his mom on his radio show yesterday to talk about their Super Bowl Sunday traditional Nana’s Nine Layer Dip and described how to make it, sounding like an expert. Ellen wondered if Ryan’s sure he’s a guy and his mom said he acts like he knows what he’s doing!

Ryan is going to Super Bowl with Fox, and said he’s going to paint his face to support both teams. Ellen and Connie both know him too well and shot that right down. Ryan agreed saying it would cause zits unless he uses Proactiv, to which his mom added he’d have to find the time for a facial or four … leading to the question of how he’s even fitting the Super Bowl into his schedule! He’ll be reporting on all the gossip sporting action on his show next week.

Idol 10: 6. Los Angeles

Posted by alice on Fri, 4 Feb 2011

The Los Angeles auditions started on a high, but unfortunately things rapidly hit rock bottom. First up was a contestant who believes god brought American Idol to LA for a purpose, and she is that purpose. They do say god moves in mysterious ways.

The second contestant wasn’t great either, but made it through to Hollywood despite making Jennifer feel old by saying he had a crush on her while he was growing up.

Ryan’s voiceover warned us things were about to take a turn for the worse, which set the tone for the rest of the show. The next guy didn’t have power in the right place … but the judges had plenty of fuel.

The next two contestants were buddies, but they were equally bad and equally deluded so their friendship didn’t suffer from the double rejection. Then a singer made it through, but she wasn’t from Los Angeles — she’d originally auditioned on MySpace.

The MySpace contestant was followed by possibly the oddest audition of the show, a girl who brought her own mic and couldn’t seem to stop saying “ow!” Though that actually caught on, as we were all saying that when she started singing. And once she started, she did NOT want to stop and when Randy left the room, she followed him. An attempt to take her microphone away failed, and eventually security had to take over.

A dancer had the moves to get her through to the next round. Steven and Randy were clearly big fans of her talents.

Next to underwhelm was a freelance music producer who’d worked with millions of a few music legends Chaka Khan. He and Randy “be beefin” … but he left his CD with Ryan.

The stream of delusional contestants continued to flow, briefly interrupted by two brothers who sang together and were a hit with the judges, before continuing to the end with a guy who was much too old to audition. Ryan apparently wasn’t a fan …

Next week it’s San Francisco, and Ryan said they’d reserved the best talent until last. They sure didn’t waste much of it on this episode!

Idol 10: 5. Austin

Posted by alice on Thu, 3 Feb 2011

The show started with a sincere apology for Steven’s outrageous behaviour, and an assurance that it wouldn’t happen again. That lasted almost two seconds.

Ah well, we can applaud the producers’ effort (for not taking the show too seriously), but, luckily for us, it seems The Demon of Screamin’ cannot be tamed.

From there it was to Ryan, who was still on the phone to his dad.

The first contestant brought the sister he’d not met until he was 14 for moral support and to act as fourth judge, and showed off his “JLo booty” when he got a ticket to Hollywood. I’m sure Jennifer was … delighted … at the flattering comparison.

Next up was a girl originally from Liverpool who turned on the waterworks when the judges said her audition was all over the place. She got through on a better second attempt, but it still wasn’t a great representation for the World Capital City of Pop. She was followed by a montage of bad singers, including a green-haired guy, whose Circle of Life was the Kiss of Death for his chances, and a heterosexual cowboy. Oh really?

From bad singing to a couple who’d decided their little bundle of joy was going to be rough and tough the day they named him. Ryan joked, “would have really sucked if I were your son,” but cowboy senior fired right back with, “no, you wouldn’t be the way you are now!” Well, thank any deity of your choosing that Ryan grew up where he did … I bet there’d have been no My Little Pony Castle for Ryan to play with in THAT house!

Despite his dad’s best efforts, the cowboy clearly has a secret liking for shiny, pretty things as he picked up Ryan and twirled him around after he got his golden ticket. Ryan then twirled cowboy senior around … my reaction to this show of masculinity wasn’t so much “look at Ryan, he’s so big and strong!” as “oh heck, he’s going to put his hip out!”

Turns out it wasn’t his hip we needed to worry about, but where he was putting his hands!

Ryan’s masculinity wasn’t in question with the next contestant as she thinks Ryan is the sexiest man alive — and she’s going to marry him some day. It’s a shame she’s not a better singer, because we could get behind someone who loves Ryan that much! She did okay, bonded with Steven over a chicken impression, and made it to Hollywood … where she’ll hopefully stalk Ryan some more. Great choice of soundtrack to their love story.

A series of successful contestants was followed to Hollywood by the new (self-proclaimed) American Idol power couple and a singer who thinks people have the wrong idea about country people. This was followed by a 7ft Armadillo and other crazies who didn’t make it through.

Time was running out so it was time for the final sob story … which didn’t come! Idol broke with expectation and just gave us a great singer who looks like the love child of Seth Rogen and Fraggle Rock. He took the last golden ticket from Austin, though really he should have been given a pass right through to the top 40. He’s that good.

50 people made it through to Hollywood and auditions continue tomorrow in Los Angeles.
