Idol 10: 4. Nashville

We were promised great things from Nashville, and they definitely started on a high. So high, in fact, that Ryan went outside to check that the building’s windows were still intact.

Contestant number two was so bad that Randy was sure it was a joke and so squeaky that Jennifer thought she should voice cartoons. She wasn’t deterred by getting a “no” from three judges. In fact, one of the “no“s had morphed into a “yes” by the time she left the room. Awesome!

Gotta love Ryan’s look towards the camera!

Next up was an ex couple who’d been singing together a long time. Ryan went in for details on their relationship and breakup, and gave the guy a hug when he found out they lived together after the split … while she dated other men.

Things got a little awkward as Jennifer and Steven played matchmaker, while outside Ryan talked with the new boyfriend. The judges made a big deal out of them sounding good together, but liked them separately too so both are through to the next round.

After a couple of contestants showing off talents other than singing, and a philosophical tattoo artist with dubious taste in ice cream, a former Miss Teen USA underwhelmed Jennifer but got through as Steven saw something he liked and persuaded Randy off the fence.

She was followed by a few who didn’t make it, a farm girl who did (and whose dad wanted to know who was going to pay her way to Hollywood), a little woman with a big voice (that made the judges’ ears bleed) and a man in a shiny purple body suit who’d presumably turned up for S&M Idol and taken the wrong line.

There were tantrums, and there were tears, but Ryan was always there to pick up the pieces.

Ryan talked to the parents of the contestant who ended the bad streak, but when she came outside it seemed we’d all … misread the situation.

Ooops! At least she got a ticket to Hollywood!

It was surprising the next contestant had deigned to audition because she’s already a recording artist. She’d even brought her CD for the judges … just the one, but she’s spared no expense on packaging.

Ryan did well to keep a straight face … that glow she gives off is tangible delusion. Predictably, the audition didn’t go well, and Ryan checked she’d understood what they were telling her.

Uh. No. And if Ryan were any dryer, he’d spontaneously ignite.

After the lows come the highs, so we saw a run of guys make it through, followed by a fifteen year old girl who the judges loved. I didn’t like her audition song much, but when she sang Aerosmith with Steven: wow!

Naturally, Ryan found a female relative in need of a celebratory hug. He’s definitely a mom magnet!

Next week it’s Texas, and … what’s going on here?
