Ryan talks Idol with Justin Bieber

More: Justin Bieber Reveals What Movie He Saw with Rumored Girlfriend Selena Gomez [AUDIO]

On his show today, Ryan talked to Justin Bieber about young talent and him being the inspiration for lowering the age limit for American Idol contestants. Justin has a world tour coming up, and he and Ryan both think guys should go … to pick up girls. Ryan said that’s the whole reason he goes to the eyebrow waxing salon.

Idol 10: 4. Nashville

Posted by alice on Sat, 29 Jan 2011

We were promised great things from Nashville, and they definitely started on a high. So high, in fact, that Ryan went outside to check that the building’s windows were still intact.

Contestant number two was so bad that Randy was sure it was a joke and so squeaky that Jennifer thought she should voice cartoons. She wasn’t deterred by getting a “no” from three judges. In fact, one of the “no“s had morphed into a “yes” by the time she left the room. Awesome!

Gotta love Ryan’s look towards the camera!

Next up was an ex couple who’d been singing together a long time. Ryan went in for details on their relationship and breakup, and gave the guy a hug when he found out they lived together after the split … while she dated other men.

Things got a little awkward as Jennifer and Steven played matchmaker, while outside Ryan talked with the new boyfriend. The judges made a big deal out of them sounding good together, but liked them separately too so both are through to the next round.

After a couple of contestants showing off talents other than singing, and a philosophical tattoo artist with dubious taste in ice cream, a former Miss Teen USA underwhelmed Jennifer but got through as Steven saw something he liked and persuaded Randy off the fence.

She was followed by a few who didn’t make it, a farm girl who did (and whose dad wanted to know who was going to pay her way to Hollywood), a little woman with a big voice (that made the judges’ ears bleed) and a man in a shiny purple body suit who’d presumably turned up for S&M Idol and taken the wrong line.

There were tantrums, and there were tears, but Ryan was always there to pick up the pieces.

Ryan talked to the parents of the contestant who ended the bad streak, but when she came outside it seemed we’d all … misread the situation.

Ooops! At least she got a ticket to Hollywood!

It was surprising the next contestant had deigned to audition because she’s already a recording artist. She’d even brought her CD for the judges … just the one, but she’s spared no expense on packaging.

Ryan did well to keep a straight face … that glow she gives off is tangible delusion. Predictably, the audition didn’t go well, and Ryan checked she’d understood what they were telling her.

Uh. No. And if Ryan were any dryer, he’d spontaneously ignite.

After the lows come the highs, so we saw a run of guys make it through, followed by a fifteen year old girl who the judges loved. I didn’t like her audition song much, but when she sang Aerosmith with Steven: wow!

Naturally, Ryan found a female relative in need of a celebratory hug. He’s definitely a mom magnet!

Next week it’s Texas, and … what’s going on here?

Idol 10: 3. Milwaukee

Posted by alice on Sat, 29 Jan 2011

It was off to a cold start for Ryan in Milwaukee, but the first contestant made it through to Hollywood. The second contestant didn’t make it through to the next round, but he did manage to impress Ryan with his Lady Gaga claw deejaying skills.

All signs pointed towards the end of the road as Ryan checked in with the contestant’s family, and it was a no from the judges.

Perhaps he should have tried tears and promises, as that got the next young contestant through for another shot in Hollywood. The next four contestants put their own unique spin on their audition songs. Sadly, unique in a bad way.

A singer who’d already worked at Summerfest (as a groundsperson) got a golden ticket, and Ryan managed a successful high five …

Ryan and Jennifer are still trying to out-diva each other.

Auditions continued with someone else who was trying to out-do Jennifer, followed by a guy with a giant toothbrush who appeared to be wearing a suit made out of Giuliana Rancic’s old balloon boy dress. Moving swiftly on …

Next up was a real singer with shiny sneakers and a pretty face. He made it through to Hollywood rocking out the Marvin Gaye, while outside Ryan sold himself a little short.

Ryan Seacrest … making jokes about his height so you don’t have to. For the record: Ryan isn’t short. He’s concentrated awesome.

Things heated up with a little Bieber fever and a look at some of the younger contestants, starting with a 5 year old kindergartner and followed by a stream of 15 year olds who all struck gold.

Naturally this couldn’t last, and the most unusual contestant of the day walked in: a civil war reenactor who first tried to take pot shots at Ryan and then vehemently defended his non-pot-smoking father against the people who think he looks like a hippy: “No! He’s not a hippy. Hippies believe in … sex!”

After another underwhelming contestant there was one who packed a punch — though not as much as Randy did to her on the way through the contestants’ waiting area. Harvard grad, White House Intern, great looks (despite Randy’s best efforts at sabbotage) and can sing. She’s going to be popular with the girls when hell freezes over. Even her stand in family is hot…

Day two started with a couple of golden tickets, then Dr Seacrest had to step in to rescue an ailing family member whose family was far more interested in the celebrations.

Next through to Hollywood was an accountant who only had eyes for Ryan as he walked out of the room.

People, please! He’s not a toy!

The next contestant was dreadful, but couldn’t believe it when she got a “no” from all three judges: “Is it because I’m not skinny like half of these female singers?” She stropped past Ryan and didn’t want to be on camera any more … and she wasn’t the only one.

The next to try out had been compared with both Luther Vandross and Usher … which turned out to be as much of a stretch as it sounded. Things improved briefly as we met Jennifer’s favourite contestant so far, but that was followed by a crazy Packers fan who gave Justin Bieber’s Baby an operatic makeover.

From a Packers fan to a Steven Tyler fan … who Steven thought was a bit pitchy … who made it through on his vote. A lovely moment which didn’t seem in any way contrived. Finally it was time for the last contestant, which meant another tragic back story. He seems a decent guy, but more importantly he had a decent voice which meant he made it through too.

In total, 53 people made it to Hollywood, but no word on how many of those picked Ryan up.

I wish they wouldn’t do that … it’s not funny! Well, maybe a little … until someone drops him and he gets hurt.

Idol 10: 2. New Orleans

Posted by alice on Fri, 21 Jan 2011

This wasn’t the first trip to New Orleans for American Idol, and the show started off with a look back at Ryan’s attempt at a little French the last time he was here.

No wonder he decided to stick to English for the motto this time!

While the first contestant impressed the judges with his vocals, Ryan had a bit of fun with his family.

Ouch!

The pain continued with four not-so-hot singers, then a girl whose big lips and bigger voice Steven admired made it through to Hollywood.

The next contestant’s attention was focussed on Jennifer, the goddess, who’d married his idol Marc Anthony. After getting a yes from all three judges, this happened:

You see what’s wrong with this picture? No, not Randy’s roar or the admiring looks he’s getting from the other two guys. No, Ryan is what’s wrong! Or rather no Ryan … his shirt needed to go too! Such a disappointment. Ryan was disappointed too, but his priorities were on a different page:

You know, he has a point …

The spotlight stayed on The Dawg a little longer as the next contestant brought in some high school photos of Randy … and his old coach! She made it through to Hollywood, and Ryan helped her with a little fake-out before the screaming started.

New Orleans continued to deliver, with a sixteen year old who described himself as a red apple in a pile of green apples. Luckily the judges like red apples and he stormed out of the room with his golden ticket, with Ryan just slightly faster than the door.

From there things went downhill with another run of contestants who didn’t make it through, ending with one who’d been to Idol Camp. As Randy said, maybe they should cancel the camp.

Last up, a fifteen year old boy with a pretty voice and a mom who was singing for her special needs daughter both made it through.

Another great show ended, and Ryan and the successful contestants sailed off into the sunset to Hollywood on the Creole Queen.

I’m really looking forward to next week’s shows. I love the new judges and there’s definitely a bit of talent heading towards California.

Idol 10: 1. New Jersey

Posted by alice on Thu, 20 Jan 2011

photo: @RyanSeacrest

American Idol Season 10 got off to a GREAT start in New Jersey! The first nine minutes was everything Ryan promised, starting with a look back at the rumours about who Idol could get to replace Simon Cowell (virtually irreplaceable in many eyes) and the drama of the big reveal, and followed by a look forward to the new era. Ryan gave an overview of the judges’ impressive credentials, showed some of the huge crowds of people who tried out, then gave a sneak peek at some of the talent … and some of the crazy.

From there on, the show was about the talent, starting with Ryan whipping a crowd of fist pumping New Jersey contestants into a frenzy as we watched the judges arrive (several weeks later) and settle into their seats. The first couple of singers made it through to Hollywood, giving us a chance to see the judges’ chemistry (present and very promising) while Ryan waited outside where he could charm the ladies (not everything has changed!)

It was all going well until the first not-so-talented contestant walked in and we got to see Steven nicely tell it like it is while Jennifer struggled with saying “no”, which Ryan had talked about on his radio show yesterday. Ryan joined the judges at this point to see how it was going, and gave Jennifer a little advice on creativity.

Next up, New Jersey represented with a girl who teased her hair, then tried to tease Ryan with her ample curves, telling him to “look down!” But it was a “no” from Ryan, who apparently didn’t want to look at a butt that probably weighs more than he does.

During a montage of dreadful singing, Steven scored the understatement of the night, telling one that singing wasn’t his forte. No kidding!

The first real back story of the night was a guy who’d overcome being in a wheelchair; he walked out with ticket to Hollywood — as did the showtune-singing Britney fan who brought the crazy and the enthusiasm.

They were followed to Hollywood by the sickly sweet 16 3/4 year old, the “green card lottery winner” from Kosovo, and the singing waitress who embraced Ryan saying, “I don’t even know you!”

Another run of singers with more confidence than talent led into a montage of contestants singing Party in the USA badly, but some people brought the moves …

The last two contestants both had a story: the girl whose dad had fought throat cancer and won, and the boy from the Bronx who was rising above his tough background. At the end, Ryan checked in with the judges for a wrap up before a short preview of tomorrow night’s auditions.

Overall the show came back very strong. The judges and Ryan definitely have chemistry. Ryan was as entertaining as usual, both Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez had great moments, and there are already a couple of promising contestants.

Ryan retweeted some positive reactions after the show aired on the East Coast — these were very representative of the conversations at the time, not just cherry picked from the best. I was following several strands of conversation online, and while there were some negative comments (mostly people missing Simon), most reactions I saw were positive and a lot of people were pleasantly surprised by the new judges. It looks like it’s going to be a great season!

Ryan and Dennis take Park City

Posted by alice on Wed, 19 Jan 2011

Ryan Seacrest

Ryan and Dennis are off to Park City, Utah, for the Sundance Film Festival. There’s only one issue … they were a last minute addition and there aren’t many hotel rooms left because everywhere is booked up. Fortunately they do have a room. Just the one, which they’ll have to share. Dennis doesn’t sound too keen … probably because Ryan’s already sounding a little high maintenance, wanting to know what Dennis will be wearing to bed, whether he prefers a bath or a shower, claiming all the counter space for his toiletries and wanting to use the bathroom first. They didn’t even get to the closet! Amy called in sounding very sceptical about this plan, and asking Ryan an important question: doesn’t he have friends in Utah who could find him a place to stay? Even though “people” have houses, everywhere’s booked up.

Idol 10: Q&A with Ryan and the judges

Posted by alice on Tue, 11 Jan 2011

Ryan Seacrest

In a Q&A with USA today, Ryan answered questions about this year’s singers, lowering the age to 15, his approach to hosting, and The X Factor.

Of the contestants, Ryan said there were more tears in Hollywood and the contestants are “more nervous than they have been in the past — not intimidated, but nervous, because they have tremendous respect for one of the greatest rock stars of all time and Jennifer, who’s been successful in all aspects of the business.”

Ryan has been impressed with the 15-year-olds, citing the role of technology as a factor in making the younger kids smart: “The fact you can sit in your room and record a song and put it up on YouTube, I think, has helped cultivate performance skills.”

This year there could be more clips of contestants breaking under the pressure. “I think we’ll break some walls. I don’t think you’ll see the exact same formulaic live television show. I’m going to cover it more like a sporting event this year.”

Simon Cowell’s left American Idol for The X Factor, but Ryan’s not concerned about the competition: “The shows are different. It’s in the same genre, but it’s a different type of show. There is room for both of these shows to coexist as the most popular shows on TV. I hope they do.”

Idol 10: Not long to wait!

Posted by alice on Sun, 9 Jan 2011

It’s not long to wait now until the American Idol Season Premiere on January 19th!

The Hollywood Reporter had a great behind the scenes look at the show this week in which they talked about the changes we have to look forward to in Season 10. It’s a long article, but well worth reading. Here’s an excerpt:

“In the past, there’s been difficulty in working together,” a show insider says. “All these different elements were somewhat disjointed, where one bit finished and another started. This year, it’s all about being a powerhouse. All the partners — the producers, Fox, CKX, the sponsors, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and their managers, Universal, Jimmy Iovine — have a reinforced resolve to work together, like Idol United. Ryan in particular; he’s fired up with all the interactive stuff, but as a matter of pride, he’s determined to make this our biggest season. Now with Simon gone, even though they’re still friends, the cynicism and bullshit drops away, so he’s coming with all kinds of ideas.”

On Air with Ryan Seacrest will broadcast its syndicated show in Sydney and Melbourne from Monday — that’s two destinations we can to the vacation list (well, we wouldn’t want to miss a show!) On Air will go out at 7pm weekdays on Mix 106.5 and Mix 101.1 and Ryan sounds very happy about connecting with his new audience:

@RyanSeacrest: “I’m beyond excited to be On Air in Sydney and Melbourne. It’s always a thrill to know our show is broadcasting all the way on the other side of the planet from Hollywood in one of my favorite countries. We look forward to delivering the best in music and pop culture from Hollywood all the way Down Under.”

The Content Director at Australian Radio Network is looking forward to having Ryan bring a touch of Hollywood to Syndey and Melbourne listeners:

Duncan Campbell: “With celebrity being such an important part of our listeners’ lives these days, Ryan will be a great addition to the line-up on Mix Sydney and Melbourne. When it comes to being connected to the world of celebrity, whether through music, movies or entertainment, no one comes close to Ryan. We look forward to working with him and the team to position this show as the number one-rated radio program in both Sydney and Melbourne.”

The Executive Director of International Business Development at Premiere Radio Networks acknowledges Ryan’s universal appeal:

Tanya Juhasz: “On Air’s success around the globe demonstrates the universal appeal and global recognition that only Ryan Seacrest can deliver regardless of the market, the language or the culture. We’re excited to launch in Sydney and Melbourne, and look forward to years of ratings success on our partner’s Mix stations!”

With a worldwide audience that’s already estimated to be around 20 million listeners per week, Ryan’s show is truly global, going out in Malaysia, South Africa, UAE and now Australia, in addition to almost everywhere in Canada and the United States. There’s no stopping him … which is a very good thing!

Ryan talked about this on his radio show today: On-Air, 7 Jan. Also on today’s show, Ryan talked more about his new automatic toilet, called his mom Connie Seacrest, and interviewed Tim McGraw about Country Strong and Sofia Vergara from Modern Family.

Fewer smoke clouds and less shepherd's pie

Posted by alice on Thu, 6 Jan 2011

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ryan apparently had one topic on his mind according to the NY Post’s article: Simon Cowell.

Simon was “just so jealous of me”

“From Day One, he was envious of my career at such a young age”

Now, without Cowell in the picture, “it’s aged the show down a bit,” Seacrest says.

“There are less clouds of smoke. We start earlier. There’s less — what’s that English dish he always ordered for lunch? — Shepherd’s Pie.”

I’m sure Simon would be touched to know he’s never far from Ryan’s thoughts…

It’s just two weeks until the show returns with the Season 10 premiere. Despite the doom and gloom from some pundits, American Idol won the “Favorite Competition Show” category at the 2011 People’s Choice Awards so it seems the show’s still a fan favourite!

Ryan announced Khloé Kardashian & Lamar Odom’s new reality show today:

When Khloé Kardashian and Lamar Odom said “I do” in 2009, it was front-page celebrity news throughout the world. Now, the power couple is putting their life together at the center of a new television series, when the cameras begin rolling on “Khloé & Lamar” (working title) in early 2011. In the new series, the outspoken Kardashian sister and the Los Angeles Lakers star will invite cameras into their home, where Khloé’s brother Robert Kardashian has become a semi-permanent houseguest. Robert, while he won’t give up his video games, is embarking on his own career in the music industry now that he is no longer living with mom Kris and step-dad Bruce Jenner.

Filming for this new Ryan Seacrest Productions show will take place early this year. There’s been lots of buzz about @RSP recently, with the Laurieann Gibson show they’re producing for E!, filming for Kim and Kourtney take New York and a new series of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.

Do you recognise Ryan's friends?

Ryan Seacrest and the Hough family
@RyanSeacrest: I’m hosting a dinner party w friends. Recognize anyone? Happy new yr

Do we recognise anyone? Let’s see … there’s Ryan, of course, and Julianne Hough’s older sister Sharee’s 5 kids Paris, Star (the only one with dark hair other than Ryan), Bronson, Willow and Skye, and the smiley blond boy at the front is Aidan, who is the son of Julianne’s older sister Marabeth.

And that could be Julianne’s dad’s place in Park City, Utah. There’s someone important missing from this picture … maybe she is holding the camera? How did we do? We may have had a little help from a friend with a few all of the details!

For those asking/wondering: Julianne was seen (and photographed) in Times Square on New Year’s Eve.

The show was great and the atmosphere looked electric. As NYC approached midnight, Ryan handed over to Dick Clark for the countdown.
