Almost time for #NYRE2011

It’s almost time for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2011. Ryan and Dick are in New York City (Dick will be keeping warm in the studio while Ryan is out in Times Square), with Jenny McCarthy as the Times Square Correspondent and Fergie hosting the party in LA.

Performing live in Times Square are Ke$ha, the New Kids on the Block, the Backstreet Boys and Taio Cruz. The Los Angeles portion of the show features Jennifer Hudson, Willow Smith, Ne-Yo, Avril Lavigne, Drake, Jason Derulo, La Roux, Mike Posner, Natasha Bedingfield, Far East Movement and Train.

The weather’s been a little chilly in NYC, but Ryan’s apparently prepared for the worst as he tweeted that he was putting on his long johns! Hot (in one sense at least …)

The question of who Ryan will kiss at midnight has been on everyone’s lips other than Ryan’s:

When asked by AP Radio if he’s going to kiss Hough at midnight, Seacrest flipped that question to McCarthy who says she “would totally, in a second” kiss Hough — News10

Tune in to ABC at 10pm (ET) to see all the action.

Ryan talks NYRE 2011 on GMA

Ryan Seacrest on Good Morning America

Ryan was on Good Morning America this morning to talk about New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2011. He listed some of the guests who will be performing in front of the 30 million people who tune in to watch the ball drop. He talked about his co-host Jenny McCarthy who he says is hysterical and great live, particularly as she doesn’t always think before she speaks!

Ryan likes the moment at midnight when everyone stops talking and enjoys the energy of that brief period when everyone’s on the same team. Dick Clark is happy to be there; Ryan thinks he’s a wonderful guy and is honoured to hang with him on New Year’s Eve.

He also talked about some of his other work: extending his radio contract, and the increase in popularity of radio through technology; some of the shows he’s producing, including the second season of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution for ABC; and American Idol. Ryan said the chemistry on the new panel is fantastic, not least the huggable Randy Jackson, but added that nobody can replace Simon who he knows will continue to be successful.

They tried to get the scoop on Ryan’s love life and whether he’s engaged to Julianne Hough. Ryan said he’d give them breaking news, inserted a dramatic pause, and then dropped the “after the break”. Very funny, and with perfect timing. It was almost as if he’s done that before…

Ryan then said he’s not engaged but he’s very happy, before donating a coat to the Coat Drive.

Ryan addresses a snowy issue

Posted by alice on Thu, 30 Dec 2010

Entertainment Tonight has an interview with Ryan about the conditions in NYC and whether Julianne Hough will be there.

“I actually moved my trip up. I came in earlier by a day and made it ten minutes before they shut down the runway, so we almost didn’t make it here early in the week.”

After a little more prompting, the “American Idol” host says, “I hope [Julianne’s] here. If she’s not, she’s in trouble.”

On-Air highlights 2010

Posted by alice on Thu, 30 Dec 2010

I could make a top ten list of favourite moments from every radio show Ryan does, which makes it really difficult to choose just ten from the entire year. But after much deliberation, here are my top ten moments from 2010.

10. The fly

Ryan had a late night visit from a fly which buzzed around his ears, driving him crazy. Eventually it left through an open door, but Ellen warned him it’d be back.

9. Ryan’s imaginary menagerie

Ryan talked authoritatively on the topic of sex toys: “the octopus saves relationships”.

8. Popular with the fans

Ryan was happy that a group of teenage girls turned up to see him!

7. Ryan eats from the pan

Ryan cooked for himself after a dinner meeting with no dinner even though he had no food in the house.

6. Dennis and Corinne get in Ryan’s pants

Ryan was in San Francisco for American Idol, and Dennis got the job of describing Ryan’s casual look to Ellen back in LA … which meant he had to take a look in his pants. He couldn’t find what he was looking for, so Corinne joined the party.

5. Giuliana’s dress

Ryan called Giuliana to let her know that her metallic dress caused damage to E! technical equipment and took down the international feed. Giuliana’s not sure if Ryan’s kidding … he’s very convincing.

4. The hidden power of the duvet

Ryan knows his bedding will keep him safe from all harm!

3. Ryan’s bedmates

Ryan’s sleep was a little disturbed through the summer heat … and his bedmates. He rolled over and there was something stiff poking in his thigh … and Ryan didn’t think there should be anyone with a stiff edgy thing near his bed.

2. On-Air on the road

Jimmy Kimmel suggested that Ryan do his show through a soup can and string while being interviewed about doing his show on his laptop after a power failure. With perfect comedy timing, a short time later Ryan and Ellen were broadcasting live from the road as they made a crazy dash through LA traffic to the Burbank office as the studio computers had failed.

1. Boys versus girls

Any call to Connie Seacrest is a candidate for highlight of the year, but this one is a classic that just edged out the one where she reminded Ryan that she’d told him not to go out in the water over his head when he called to say he’d been swimming with whales. On this occasion, Ryan called his mom to find out who was easier to raise: him or Meredith. Obviously she’d say Ryan, right? Wrong!

Buffalo News has an article talking about the atmosphere in Times Square on New Years Eve, where Ryan will be next week bringing in the new year with Dick Clark, who’s been rockin’ new years eve since before Ryan was born.

Ryan: “I was intimidated by all of it. I am not a native New Yorker, and the first time I experienced it, I was hosting a New Year’s Eve show for another network. One thing is consistent every year: No matter what is going on in your life at the moment—a split, a hardship of any kind — you literally forget all of your anxiety and stress, and you forget everything when ‘New York, New York’ plays! If you could bottle the energy and electricity of those few moments.”

Ryan: “It’s like covering a sporting event. Dick (Clark) gave me some great advice early on and that is, ‘Shut up!’ As you build up to midnight, let it be. Let the energy host the show. Let the crowd host the show. It’s a traditional celebration.”

Ryan Seacrest and Meredith Seacrest preparing for Christmas on Ryans birthday

Today we have reason to celebrate: it’s Ryan’s 36th birthday! Ryan’s a year older, but he’s even better looking and more successful than he was this time last year. It could almost be annoying if we didn’t love him, but as we do we’ll wish him even more success and a very happy birthday!

A birthday seems like a good time to take a look back at the year and remember some of the many things Ryan’s done since he turned 35. It started with a successful New Year’s Rockin’ Eve: the show was once more the most watched New Year’s Eve show and ratings were up on the previous year.

In January, the start of American Idol Season 9 marked the arrival of Ellen DeGeneres and the announcement that it would be Simon Cowell’s last season. Simon suggested Ryan would replace him, joking about Ryan jumping between the stage and the judging chair and kicking off speculation that would last for months. Some of the new contestants stood out for their singing ability (or lack thereof), but one guy made it to air after inviting Ryan to ‘call him’! No matter how busy he is, Ryan always seems to make time for charity, and in January he helped Larry King raise millions of dollars for disaster relief in Haiti following the earthquake.

Idol Season 9 auditions continued in February, and Ryan’s “Rock My Town” contest brought Season 8 favourites Adam Lambert, Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta to NYC for a free concert. Just before Valentine’s Day, Ryan took his mom out for a quiet lunch in Santa Monica … or so she thought until they were ambushed by a Scope Outlast flash mob performing a dance to “Kiss Me” — the video was posted online and views raised money for Operation Smile.

It was a great year for Ryan Seacrest Productions with successful new shows including Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, which aired on ABC starting in March. Ryan appeared on Oprah, giving an insight into his life and motivation as well as talking about the Food Revolution, and Ryan hit the headlines for getting up and personal in Simon Cowell’s face when he wouldn’t give a straight answer on Idol. An uncomfortable-looking Simon offered to sort it out later in his trailer. We didn’t get to see Ryan and Simon kiss and make up, but there were rumours about Ryan kissing someone … a blonde A-list dancer. Ryan also made a lot of young girls happy by giving them Justin Bieber at Disneyland (sadly for them they had to give him back) and streaming a chat live for everyone to enjoy.

April started with an April Fools joke as Joel McHale “hacked” Ryan’s twitter and website. Ryan’s involvement with good causes continued as Idol Gives Back raised $45 million … and we all wanted to know exactly what Ryan knew about Adam Lambert’s talented tongue. Julianne Hough laughed off rumours she was dating Ryan, but that’s okay because we found out that somebody loved him … his son, Butter Pants, in Shrek 4.

Ryan and the Idol judges were featured on an episode of The Simpsons and American Idol said an emotional goodbye to Ryan’s buddy Simon in May, and rumours had everyone on the panel being replaced, with only Ryan sure to return. Ryan attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and speculation about his relationship with Julianne Hough continued: they were spotted together, and Ryan was reportedly “smitten”, but he stayed silent and Julianne said they were just friends.

Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami Season 2, another ratings hit for Ryan Seacrest Productions, premiered in June and Ryan hinted at leaving his radio show at the end of his current contract, sparking much speculation about his future career options. Ryan was photographed walking hand-in-hand with Julianne Hough in Malibu and seen getting cosy backstage at her show in Nashville … Ryan didn’t comment but Julianne described Ryan as nice, sweet and a really good guy. Ryan led a touching tribute to Dick Clark at the Daytime Emmys, helped raise money for the Gulf Coast clean up, hosted an opera anniversary gala, got excited about the World Cup (and hot tubs), made number 44 on the Forbes Power List and was ranked as the most influential TV host in LA by LA Confidential and Mediaite.

Larry King announced he was leaving Larry King Live, and named Ryan as his preferred replacement resulting in a lot of speculation as Ryan left LA for a vacation around the Cote d’Azur and Riviera ligure in July. Just him, his friends, and a few paparazzi photographers trailing behind. Julianne Hough joined Ryan in Italy and was photographed wrapped around him … even though the press reported that she initially thought Ryan was gay. That didn’t stop the rumours about them getting serious and moving in together. Ryan also hit the headlines for leaving a $10k tip after a business dinner in Sardinia. On his return to LA, Ryan said he didn’t have time to replace Larry King, though he was flattered to be suggested. American Top 40 celebrated its 40th anniversary and Ryan hit the road for American Idol Season 10 auditions — and entertained us with great behind-the-scenes videos.

In August, Ryan received an Emmy as producer of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution team, this year’s Outstanding Reality Program. There were rumours about a Ryan Seacrest-Larry King radio venture. Ryan was still on the road for American Idol auditions, and at the centre of speculation about the future of Idol as everyone waited to find out about new judges and format changes. Ryan continued to help others with the announcement that the Ryan Seacrest Foundation’s first Broadcast Media Center would be built at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Ryan broadcast his morning radio show from Children’s Hospital Orange County in September, raising money for CHOC and bringing smiles to the faces of the children, checked on progress of his Foundation’s new Media Center in Atlanta, and helped fundraising for Stand Up To Cancer. Ryan’s Emmy award winning show (I like typing that!) Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution aired in the UK as ABC picked up a second season to film in LA. Ryan had barely introduced the new American Idol judges to the world when rumours of his first feud … a diva war with Jennifer Lopez … hit the gossip columns. Ryan spent Labor Day Weekend in Cabo with Julianne Hough, then took her to dinner with his parents a couple of weeks later … sparking rumours of an imminent engagement.

Speculation about Ryan’s future continued into October. There was still no news about his morning radio show but Ryan was rumoured to be looking at starting a new cable network. Filming for Kourtney and Kim Take New York, the latest Kardashian spin-off, got underway in NYC. Ryan was reported to have put his Hollywood Hills home up for sale, resulting in more speculation that he was planning to marry or move in with Julianne Hough. Ryan and Julianne were seen dining out around NYC and Atlanta, but Julianne told ET that the rumour Ryan was about to propose was news to her … and probably to him too. Ryan was on the road for American Idol again, filming auditions with the new judges. Jennifer Lopez appeared on Ryan’s radio show to laugh about their supposed feud and the difficulty she was having remembering that guy who isn’t Steven Randy’s name.

November was a special month as Ryan was back in Atlanta to launch the Ryan Seacrest Foundation’s first Media Center. During the press surrounding the launch, Ryan explained how the Foundation came about, why he chose Atlanta, and his family’s involvement. While in Atlanta, Ryan visited the Ronald McDonald House and hosted the second Hearts and Hands Gala. Ryan scored an election day interview with President Obama, and American Idol callbacks came to an end, with Ryan literally on top of the world (or the AT&T building anyway). We finally found out that Ryan had decided to continue with his KIIS FM morning show for another three years — and that he had an expanded development contract with Clear Channel, which sounds exciting. Ryan, his family and Julianne spent a well-documented Thanksgiving in Paris, amid more speculation about a proposal, and Julianne told Ellen DeGeneres that Ryan’s a phenomenal boyfriend.

Earlier this month, Ryan played dead on all his social networks to help raise $1million for HIV and AIDS. Ryan went to Walt Disney World to film the Disney Christmas Day Parade, American Idol filmed Hollywood week, which included a trip to Las Vegas, then Ryan co-hosted the last ever Larry King Live before disappearing off for a vacation that appears to have been mostly off the radar.

It’s been a busy year for Ryan and he’s given us a lot of entertainment with the promise of much more to come next year and beyond. We hope he had a great vacation, and will have a birthday and Christmas week to match. Next weekend he’ll bring in the New Year, and hopefully with it everything he wishes for himself in the future.

Don’t forget to watch the Disney Christmas Day Parade tomorrow on ABC!

Final Larry King Live

Posted by alice on Fri, 17 Dec 2010

Larry King and Ryan Seacrest with Shawn King

@RyanSeacrest: In the green room w @kingsthings about to go on air

Ryan, along with Bill Maher, was with Larry through his final Larry King Live, chatting and introducing surprises for Larry. At the start Bill said it’s the end of a show not Larry’s funeral and Larry will still be around. Ryan agreed with that, saying it’s the right tone to set … before saying he and Larry are working together on something he’s producing. Larry said that was “breaking news” and Ryan added, “we’re in talks.”

Ryan introduced the first surprise of the evening: Governor Schwarzenegger thanked Larry for doing his show out of LA and announced that today was Larry King Day in California.

After looking back 25 years to what he and Bill were doing when Larry started the show, Larry went back a few years less to talk about the first time he met Ryan. They met in an airport in Paris when Ryan went over to Larry and told him he’s a big fan and admires his work. Larry had no idea who Ryan was, but his wife Shawn did and whispered to him that it’s Ryan Seacrest of American Idol. Ryan offered, “anything I can do for you” to which Larry replied, “yes. Carry my bags!” Naturally Ryan did carry Larry’s bags, and said it looked like the three of them were on holiday together. Bill Maher knew exactly what it looked like, and Larry said Ryan was his servant. On the flight back, Ryan scored an invite onto Larry’s show, appeared on the show the following week and during a commercial break was invited to host the show while Larry was away. I guess Larry thought Ryan was better at hosting shows than carrying bags!

The next surprise Ryan introduced was truly something special: a message from the president!

Focus turned to the New York studio for a while; Larry brought Ryan back in with a question about Oprah, to which Ryan replied that “it’s tough to launch a network” and had a bit of banter about Suze Orman having a great tan.

After that, Larry got grilled … by himself in a funny SNL-style skit. One of the questions ‘Larry’ asked Larry was which question he’d asked more than any over the years. Larry said, “why?” which Ryan pointed out was also really good if you’re not paying attention. We’ll be watching you for that one, Ryan! The next question was about the question nobody has asked that Larry would like to answer. Ryan threw in, “button fly or zipper?” which Larry heard as a slightly more awkward, “is your zipper unflied?” so Bill Maher clarified that Ryan wasn’t asking if Larry would do the show “with his package out.” Bill moved the topic away from Larry’s zipper (he hates a button fly), saying Larry’s the ultimate minimalist, and he’d be good at speed dating because he could know everything about a person in two minutes … but Ryan wasn’t ready to let the zipper go just yet: “that’s why he prefers the zipper over the button fly!” Larry explained that Ryan knows this because he’s bought him jeans in the past and Ryan explained — in his Larry voice — that Larry needed the zipper because at his age, he has to go quick.

Larry’s next surprise guests were news anchors Katie Couric, Diane Sawyer, Brian Williams, and Barbara Walters. Brian mentioned Bill Maher, so Larry prompted him for his thoughts on Ryan: “a sparkling, still emerging talent.”

Larry introduced Bill Clinton direct from Little Rock. The connection had an unusually long delay, which President Clinton quipped was because they talk slower down there. Larry said that they were both in “the zipper club” … though Larry was told by ‘the suits’ to explain that was a term for people who’ve had open heart surgery, presumably in case anyone still thought they were on the topic of fly fastenings. Ryan asked the president about his time since leaving office; Larry asked him why he never goes on Bill Maher’s show, and Ryan asked Bill Mayer why he’s never done his show. Bill said that’s because Ryan does his show in the morning when reasonable people are asleep.

Ryan read out parts of a letter from Reverend Billy Graham, who Larry did an interview with back in 2005, Dr Phil spoke about Larry not wanting to be the centre of attention, Anderson Cooper read out something touching his father had written to him before he died, and Tony Bennet sang The Best is Yet To Come. At the end of the show, Larry’s wife and two boys were on too explaining what this means to them, which Ryan said was a special moment, seeing them share that together. They’re looking forward to having more time with Larry (though maybe not too much!)

Larry was on his own for his final “so long” and the lights dimmed in the studio, and on an era in broadcasting.

Such an amazing photo of Ryan! That style suits him perfectly.

Ryan talked about some of the rumours that are flying around on his radio show this morning. He mentioned speculation about increased transparency and the contestants’ being allowed to make more use of social media. It’s going to be a long week for Ryan as he was shooting Idol in Pasadena until around 9 last night and is expecting to film until around midnight tonight. I hope he’s got tomorrow’s radio show pre-recorded — even Ryan needs to sleep some time!

There are 300+ people through Hollywood this year, which is many more people than in previous seasons. It’s not just large numbers, as Ryan said the judges have a lot of talent to choose from and it’s going to be more difficult this season for contestants to stand out. Having a great voice is not going to be enough to get them through; they’ll need something more. The judges have sent lots of pretty people through. Ryan spoke for the guys saying they’d be very happy, and according to Debbie the stage manager, the girls are going to be pretty happy too.

According to Joe’s Place, the contestants have been singing a capella yesterday and today. Around 75 contestants were cut yesterday. Tomorrow will be group day and Friday will be solo performances. This process will cut the number of contestants down to 40, and these contestants will head to Las Vegas and sing with the cast of Love by Cirque du Soleil. Too Fab says the final 12 will move out of the hotel in Pasadena and into a mansion in Los Angeles and the contestants are taping a “confessional” saying why they want to be the next American Idol, and if they’re cut, their thoughts on being sent home.

$1,000,000 raised to fight AIDS

Posted by alice on Tue, 7 Dec 2010

Ryan participated in Alicia Keys’ World AIDS Day “digital death” campaign to raise money to treat children with HIV and AIDS. Their target of $1million was achieved yesterday, thanks to the generosity of Stewart Rahr, who added $500,000 to the contributions already made, so the celebrities — including Ryan — are alive and tweeting again. It’s good to have @RyanSeacrest back online — he’s been missed!

Alicia talked to Ryan about the fundraising, where the money will go, and reminded everyone that the project doesn’t end here. Our favourite celebrities have their digital lives back, but it’s important to remember that there are still real lives that need to be saved and suffering that can be eased with the right care and medicine. Ryan talks with Katy Perry

Fresh from killing it at Jingle Ball, Katy was on air with Ryan. Ryan asked Katy how she felt about getting four Grammy nominations. Katy’s happy about those because it’s peer recognition, mentioning the difficulty winning awards voted by fans when some artists have fans who’ll sit there voting non-stop. Ryan asked about rumours Katy is going to be a judge on the US version of X Factor. Katy said that she’d heard the rumour but nobody had looked at her tour schedule for next year if they thought that. She said she loved Simon, the other entertainment industry, along with Ryan, whose ass it’s important to kiss, but gave Ryan an exclusive ‘no’.

Before introducing the act, Ryan talked about deciding to renew his contract with KIIS FM for another three years and tried to get a little romance going in the audience.

Ryan said this was going to be his last year of getting up early and suffering the pain of the alarm going off, before explaining why he decided it’s what he wants to do. Then he wanted to know who was on a date, specifically a first date, before sending them in for a French kiss.

Ryan brought on stage a guy who’d done a little singing for Enrique … enthusiastic, but painful … and checked on his current level of hydration. There was more enthusiasm for Ryan than a lot of the acts … seems that a lot of us are happy he’s taken on three more years of the early shift!
