On-Air with Ryan Seacrest launched in Malaysia today! Ryan’s syndicated radio show will run weekdays from 1pm to 4pm on Fly FM in Kuala Lumpur. That’s amazing, and there’s been a lot of buzz about it on twitter, so it looks like FlyFM’s listeners are excited to listen to Ryan too.
On Ryan’s radio show on Friday he talked about his plans for the long weekend, saying he thought at first he’d stay at home but was thinking about having a staycation.
Ryan said on Friday that he didn’t want to go too far because of the traffic, and tweeted on Sunday that they went to Santa Monica with their parents.
When you’re already as successful as Ryan is, you shouldn’t be billed as ‘the next’ anyone, but a lot of people are talking about whether Ryan is going to replace Simon as a judge on American Idol.
Nigel addresses an important point in his response: Ryan is one of the best hosts around (the best in our opinion!), so if Ryan replaces Simon, the Idol producers still have a huge gap to fill.
On their website, TMZ wrote:
There is only one person who could replace Simon Cowell on “American Idol” … someone famous, someone critical, and someone with a penchant for tight clothing … someone like Ryan Seacrest.
TMZ is running a stack of polls about this. Only a third of people who voted would like to see Ryan switch to a judging role, with the idea of bringing Dunkleman back to host getting a resounding ‘no’ at just 20%. The intriguing suggestion of switching Ryan and Ellen has people undecided, currently it’s 52%-48% in Ryan’s favour, but there’s overwhelming support (83%) for going back to three judges. Whether people think the three existing judges could carry the panel is an issue they don’t address.
A huge 64% of people who voted said they would not watch the show without Simon, but as ratings and votes have dropped this season while Simon was still there, it seems that choosing the right contestants is more important than who replaces Simon. For whatever reason, it doesn’t feel as though people have engaged as much with this season’s contestants, but if the right ones make it through Hollywood and the early live stages next season, there’s no reason why the show won’t be just as popular as before, no matter who’s judging.
I have nothing against the idea of Ryan as a judge, but he’s already perfect as the host of American Idol and I don’t like the idea of him getting an unfair share of the blame if it’s another weak season. So many different celebrities have been rumoured to be in the frame to replace Simon, but as both recent additions to the judging panel have received a luke warm welcome, perhaps it’s time to try something entirely different.
As the judges have very little actual power once the live shows start, maybe it’s time to incentivise voting and viewing and make it a way for a member of the American public to win their way onto the panel for a week. That should get some people voting while others could rub their hands in glee thinking about what kind of crazy, unfiltered, loose cannon would win their way onto the judging panel this week. For the reading on his radio show today, Ryan had props: scented candles, flowers and a scarf and he slipped disturbingly easily back into the role of Bella. Dennis giggled just after Ryan had got into character, so Ryan had an aborted start and needed to get his sexy back on. It can’t be easy for a serious actor like Ryan (number one at the box office!) to demonstrate his art if people aren’t taking it seriously.

Great job, Ryan! We’re moved by such a touching and sincere performance. Hopefully we’ll get to see video of the readings again this year — props don’t come over too well on radio, and we need to see Ryan hamming it up make his subtle, meaningful gestures … and see if he manages to put the candle out without injury.

Ryan thought Lee was going to fall over last night, and Lee was in agreement. Lee talked about the moment when ‘they’ read out his name. A moment Ryan remembered quite well himself! Although Lee really wanted it, he sounds like he wasn’t really expecting to win — but it sounds like he kept the goal in mind.
Bret was one of the surprise guests on yesterdays American Idol finale. He and Ryan talked about his performance, and also his ongoing recovery from a brain hemorrhage. Bret described the feeling when it happened as instant, a paralysis, like a migraine times ten, and knowing immediately it was bad. He talked about his family being a focus for his will to survive, and the importance of getting immediate treatment. His sense of humour was intact, and listening to him joke with Ryan about what he was watching not even be good porn, it’s hard to imagine how seriously ill he’s been.
Crystal talked a little about music being an expression rather than a competition, and gave Ryan an exclusive: she and her boyfriend called it quits before the finale performance show and he went home. Full credit to Crystal that she didn’t let it show, and she didn’t use it to her advantage by talking about it. Kara was in the interview too and talked about how much she admires the way Crystal supported Lee, and other contestants. Kara mentioned not being able to have much contact with the contestants during the competition, but had seen a thing or two that she liked.
I haven’t watched the video as Ryan’s radio show is on. According to the decsription, Ryan says “hi” on his way into Cecconi’s, and Ryan sat in the front of Simon’s Rolls and what he loves about Paula Abdul is her legs.
They’re both talented and I don’t think there’s been much to choose between them over the live shows. They’re just different. Based on last night though, I think Crystal gave a much better performance in all three rounds so she’d have picked up my vote if I wasn’t a particular fan of one of the two.

I love this hilarious video from ryanseacrest.com of Ryan and Simon after American Idol auditions. Simon had UK X Factor finalists JLS stashed away in his trailer, and let Ryan use them to get a feel for judging.
Unfortunately, Ryan and Simon didn’t take it seriously enough … they talked about Ryan trying on Simon’s sweater, but didn’t actually go through with it so I guess we’ll have to wait and see!
Assuming US X Factor is following the UK format, Ryan would make an amazing X Factor judge, more so than an Idol judge, because of the mentoring aspect.
