American Idol 2009: Top 7 Show

RyanSeacrest: Quentin tarantino’s wearing a kill bill jacket. He does…“This issss american idol” at the top

Ryan introduces the band and the judges, handing over to the legendary Simon Cowell to explain the changes to the judging format: only two judges will comment at the end of each performance to save time after last week’s overrun. That sucks. I could live with Simon+1 after each performance, but if Simon’s not going to comment they should just skip to Ryan. I miss Ryan’s banter with the judges too; this format really isn’t good. Ryan’s not wearing the tie bar tonight, but he looks really good and the tie he’s wearing is fabulous.

First up is Allison Iraheta and I really like the strings at the start. Simon tells her that she’s the girls’ only hope left in the competition, so I guess he won’t be using the save on Lil Rounds if she’s bottom tomorrow.

Anoop Desai goes for a very predictable song choice, but it’s as good as that song can be. I don’t like this no Simon crap. Sack the producers.

Fortunately the next artist is Adam Lambert, and he’s certainly wild! I honestly don’t think the new rule could stop Paula commenting on Adam. Simon said Adam needs to express himself more, then compares it to a Rocky Horror musical. Wait … is that supposed to be a bad thing?! I’d take that as a compliment if I were Adam. Ryan pushed Simon to get off the fence; Simon does like it but doesn’t think it’s as good as last week. It sounds like Ryan tells Adam to come out of his shell when he leans in close. I really don’t think there’s much Adam needs to come out of!

Ryan does a bit of advertising for Coca Cola before asking Matt about working with Quentin Tarantino and doing a pretty good impression of Quentin’s energy and passion. I’m not liking Matt much this week. Randy said he fell down more places than he won, and it wasn’t one of his best performances.

The show feels rushed :( I miss Simon. I miss the playful banter. Do the producers have any idea what people watch for?

Danny Gokey is next. They could have saved time by skipping his song. He’d still get enough votes to go through. Just kidding… sorta. Quentin gave him some excellent advice about the annoying hand gestures, but he didn’t seem to pay much attention. Simon was disappointed with the harp and traditional version, talking about the more original version David did last year.

Ryan does either the best or worst (jury’s out) link of the night into Lil Rounds. Simon didn’t like it, telling her it was too MOR and she’s fighting back. It’d be funny if they had more time for the fight, but Ryan shuts her up to go to the numbers.

I’m not sure about the bottom three … maybe Lil, Matt and either Allison or Kris, but I’m sure feeling disappointed by the lack of Simon and the lack of banter with Ryan on this show.

Update: just realised I completely ignored Kris’ song above. I have a confession … I got distracted mentally debating tie bar vs pocket square for Ryan (tie bar, 100%) and I wasn’t paying attention :$ I love Kris though so hopefully it was better than it sounded from the judges’ feedback. I’ll find out when it airs in the UK on Thursday.
