American Idol 2009: Top 9 Show

Week after week the competition intensifies as the pressure mounts. But the prize is one step closer. This …. is their moment and this … is American Idol.

After Ryan’s tweet earlier in the week, there’s just one question on my mind as the show starts …

RyanSeacrest: I’m bringing back tie bars. You heard it here first. Just bought a new one this weekend.

Ryan wears his tie bar with style

Ryan’s wearing a tie bar, but is it the new one?

Ryan asked Randy how he thought the top nine was shaping up and tried to get Kara to define ‘artistry’. He asked Paula if she had any props, and Simon what he was looking forward to tonight. Without an ounce of sarcasm (hmmm), Simon replied:

You being amazing. The artists being amazing …

Not much you can say to that, so Ryan introduced the top 9 and as the theme is iTunes downloads, there was a clip showing the idols visiting Ryan in the AT40 studio. Ryan looks smart in the film in his studio.

Anoop Desai is the first to sing and I’m not really feeling it. The reviews were mixed. Simon thought it was “a complete and utter mess” and Kara thought it was the result of a frat boy dare.

Perhaps with a touch of irony, Ryan introduced Megan Joy in almost the same breath as talking about the importance of picking the right track. I didn’t think it was as bad as she’s been in previous weeks. Randy thought it was “like watching paint dry” and Kara didn’t think it was the right song.

Danny Gokey was dull as ever, then Allison Iraheta brought the show back to life. Randy asked her, “what are you wearing?” but I thought she looked great (check out the heels!) and I liked the song she picked.

Next up, Scott MacIntyre bored with a boring song … which the judges liked. I’m out of synch with them tonight! Matt Giraud went for something slightly different, which I thought was a good move after being in the bottom three last week. I liked it! The judges didn’t, but as Simon pointed out he should be happy about that!

Lil Rounds was bland but better than last week. The judges didn’t give her a hard time, then Ryan talked to her children in the audience, bringing one over to put Randy in his place … does ‘cute’ get votes? If so, she should be safe.

It’s time for Adam and I’m still not down with his clean cut look but I loved it vocally. Simon described it as “very brave” and Paula waffled vaguely incoherently about genius.

Last to sing was Kris Allen, and his was one of the performances of the night. The judges seemed to agree with Randy saying he was “in the zone”, Kara calling it “artistry” and Simon complimenting the arrangement.

After the show, Ryan gave a little backstage gossip via Twitter:

RyanSeacrest: anoop did not seem happy…the stairs and doors broke during rehersal and set everyone back 30 mins..gaga and cook tomorrow. gnite

I’m not sure who’s in danger this week … Danny, Kris and Adam should be safe. I think it’s time for Scott to leave, but the judges liked him. I liked Allison and Matt but they didn’t get good feedback and have been in the bottom three before, so they might not be too safe. Megan and Anoop were the weakest for me, but both seem to have a following. I have no idea! I’ll say Megan, Matt and Anoop for the bottom three with Megan to leave.
