American Idol 2009: Top 10 Show

“What happens when you mix the most talked about singers in the nation with some of the most influential songs in the world?”

“Tonight the music of Motown. This is your top ten …and this is American Idol.”

Ryan’s looking sharp again! And he has such a cute smile in the opening section. He makes me nervous though when he runs down those stairs!

Ryan announces that everyone is over the Influenza B outbreak. No excuses then, let’s hear what they can all do.

He asked Randy if it was a little uncomfortable last week when Alexis left, calling it brutal, and Kara whether it was tough when Simon delivered the news. Neither of them were happy to see her go. Then he and Paula met across a crowded room and had a strangely sweet exchange …

Hey Paula … good to see you … good to see you too .. you look nice … so do you ….

Paula and Ryan sitting in a tree … did they forget the xx million people watching?! So very cute! But you know Simon will get jealous ;) Paula wants the artists to challenge their artistic integrity.

And onto Simon. Ryan pointed out that tonight had some great songs. Simon agreed, “some of the best songs in the world,” but when Ryan asked if he was looking forward to this he replied, “I wouldn’t say I’m looking forward to it!” before hoping it was going to be interesting with some originality from the contestants.

Ryan introduced the top ten then talked about Smokey Robinson having written 4000 songs before going into the audience to greet Smokey and Motown founder Berry Gordy.

Matt Giraud

Ryan asked if Matt would deliver tonight, and listening to his performance, I think he did! Ryan picked up on a comment about working the room and asked Matt if he felt the growth they were talking about…

Kris Allen

Ryan said that last week we saw Kris’ sensitive side and asked what he’d be bringing to the table this week, saying that he’d won Smokey over, but what about the judges … will it work? I think it will … Kris is very believable with this song. He looks comfortable on the stage and it’s comfortable to watch. Simon rolled out his ‘needs more self-belief’ line, and suggested being conceited … just like him!

Ryan: Simon you recommended that people watched some video tape if they wanted to find out more about swagger … did you want them to watch some of you?

Simon: yes! Not you [pointing at Ryan], me! There is a limit to self-belief, Ryan

Ryan: and where are you?

Simon: middle

Ryan: hardly

Simon: awkward

Ryan: uncomfortable

Us: so cuuuuute!

Scott MacIntire (in hideous pink pants)

Ryan asked Scott about sparking a debate between Simon and Paula last week when Paula advised taking risks and losing the piano and Simon disagreed. Scott was with Simon on staying with the piano so Ryan asked Paula what she thought about that before saying “Will he win your votes tonight?” He’s not winning mine, though it’s pleasant enough for a lounge bar. Simon’s criticising the piano playing as well as the singing and Randy calls it a hotel kind of performance, which I would agree with. I don’t agree with either of them that Scott’s better than that; I think he IS average.

Ryan asked if Scott was finding it easy to select the song, which was amusing after he had just been slated for song choice. He’d had another song this week which both Simon and Randy thought would have been better. Ryan asked Paula to rate Scott in comparison to the other guys and she was evading so Simon was doing his ‘answer the question answer the question answer the question’.

Paula flipped and said “I have something for Simon” and headed under the table. Quick as anything Ryan said ‘We’re not allowed to show that!” He’s on it tonight!

Paula emerged with a packet of crayons and some colouring books for Simon and called him a six-year-old, which seemed to amuse Simon! Ryan had to explain to Scott what was happening, then it cut to Simon trying to draw on Paula’s face … it’s her own fault for giving him crayons! … and Paula explained that Simon had the choice between two books.

Ryan was eyeing up one of the books for himself (Pirates?) then said, “Dare I ask what other things you have under this table?” He was so glad he asked when Paula replied “It’s under my skirt!” Kara jumped back, Simon laughed and covered Paula’s mouth and Ryan jumped right into talking about ‘the music of Motown’ and introducing the next link!!

ITV2 have dropped the discussion about Scott’s pink pants. wtf! That was funny. I know it makes sense to cut the numbers, but they trim too far for my liking.

Megan Joy

Her performance was horrible. Bottom three this week?

Anoop Desai

I prefer his up-tempo performances, but it’s good. Ryan asked Randy where Anoop ranked amongst the guys and asked Anoop what he made of the judges’ feedback and whether he felt he could win the competition … Anoop said you shouldn’t be there if you don’t think you can win.

Michael Sarver

Ryan said Michael wasn’t feeling well last week so hadn’t been to Detroit with the others and asked how it had affected his preparation. This is going to be roadkill.

After the performance, Ryan pointed out that it’s tough to have people say “you don’t have what it takes” and asked Michael how it felt. He didn’t seem to mind … so perhaps he knows he’s stayed longer than he should. Hopefully that’s his farewell speech.

Lil Rounds whose name Ryan pronounced twice … for Simon’s benefit?

She should be good this week, but she’s not that great. That’s a bit disappointing. Is it time for Adam yet? I’m enjoying the Ryan and Simon banter (and even the Ryan and Paula exchanges!), but the singing’s gone a little cold.

Ryan asked Lil how she’d deal with getting opposite criticism from Paula and Kara. She tried to agree with both of them, but I didn’t quite follow her point. But who cares, because Adam is next! After the break…

Adam Lambert

Ryan said Adam’s going unplugged and I have to do a double-take!! WTF! I’m not liking the look at all, but he sounds great. I want pretty!Adam back next week … I like the make-up and nail polish, but maybe I’m just a bit disturbed because my first thought when I saw Adam dressed like this was ‘Ray Quinn’. The singing is awesome though … the song’s not to my taste as much as Ring of Fire was, but it’s truly fabulous. Suck that, judges! Kara had six words for Adam, which six they were from the ones she gave him, I’m not sure. I’m happy Adam got such a great reaction, but I’m not happy that ITV2 cut Ryan and cut back on the intro to Danny Gokey.

Danny Gokey

Oh I hated that. It’s not that he’s a bad singer … I just find him bland and dull. And no Ryan at the end to sweeten it.

Allison Iraheta

I love Paula sitting on Ryan’s knee … that’s cute! For one horrible second I thought Randy was sitting on Simon’s knee too :-O

Allison is great and I love her song choice this week. The judges and Ryan are playing musical chairs and Paula’s staying on her feet so she must be getting ready to dance. This is a great performance, she shouldn’t be bottom three this week (top three would be more like it). More surreal judges’ moments during the panel. Simon’s drawing a moustache onto Paula’s face, which is to be expected if he’s given crayons, but the weird thing is it looks like Paula’s letting him!! Allison gets the giggles and asks Paula “why’d he have to do that?!” and Paula must realise that she’s looking silly. Was Simon trying to give her whiskers…

Simon’s completely lost it and doesn’t regain his composure while he tries to give feedback and totally has the giggles, which is really funny.

My top three performances of the evening are Simon and his crayons, Ryan and Simon, and Ryan and Paula. Of the contestants I liked Adam, Allison and Kris most and my bottom three would be Megan, Michael and Scott.
