American Idol 2009: Wildcard Show
Ryan’s looking very smart again. I particularly love the open-necked shirt and the waistcoat.
I thought Jesse did a good job but the judges didn’t seem convinced. Matt was back to his best vocally though he looked a bit odd. I’m not feeling Megan, but Simon called her original and quirky. I thought Von’s performance was quite weak, but maybe that’s because he’s trying to reel himself in. This show’s getting a bit boring without much time for banter between Ryan and the judges, so I’m just looking forward to finding out who’s through.
Jasmine and Ricky both did a good job, and it’s like watching reruns of Top of the Pops when the camera shows Paula and the remaining contestants dancing away in the background! I hit fast forward when Ryan introduced ‘you know who’ (Voldemort?) but my HDR let me down as I was up at the live broadcast (I have been replaying the intros) so I had to watch her sing. Hopefully she’s out after singing that song again, which is the only consolation for having to sit through it. Tatiana is playing weird with her accent and stupid laugh … is she trying to get in on the quirk factor? Simon called her out on singing it three times and asked if she’d sing the same song again if she got through. Tatiana was kneeling down praying or something when Ryan walked on stage, so he said
Ha ha! I’m sure he didn’t mean it the way everyone took it, but it was very, very funny. How Ryan kept a straight face with all the heckling, and whatever horror was going through his mind, I’ll never know.
Anoop’s performance was a bit disappointing. I loved it, but why did he do the same song again? Simon said he was like an enthusiastic dog. He’s described Ryan that way before, so it’s a compliment! Maybe that’s why we like Anoop.
Ryan asked if there was a spot in the top twelve for Jasmine, and Randy put her straight through. Ryan looks genuinely happy for her. Kara told Ricky he wouldn’t be going through before calling Megan and Tatiana down to face Paula. Megan got the place and Tatiana wandered over to Paula, going out with a little more drama. Von was the next to get closed down by Paula, leaving Matt and Anoop for the final spot. Simon told Matt he’d made it through to the final twelve, then told Ryan to keep Anoop on stage … and said they’d decided recently they were going to make it a top 13!
Ryan’s expression as he said “you’re looking at the top THIRTEEN” was great! He must have known, but he was doing a good wtf face towards the judges anyway.

Next week, Adam Lambert is back so there’ll be a little less fast forwarding! Ryan said that Kelly Clarkson and Kanye West would be on the show. Can we have a little more Ryan/Simon banter too, please?
