American Idol 2009: Live Show 3

The stand out performance on this show was Ryan. He had us in stitches the whole show and we were hitting refresh on our Twitter accounts every time there was a commercial break in case he’d tweeted some more.

His tweets started off with a little TMI

RyanSeacrest: at Idol…bout to go live. I haven’t peed since lunch.

Um. Thanks for sharing. Very funny!!

After getting in on Alex’s rock star mic trashing:

RyanSeacrest: Oops – I think I just broke a microphone at idol. The sound guys are gonna be maaaad…(west coasters, watch after alex’s song)

RyanSeacrest: http://twitpic.com/1ty21 – Commercial break – hangin w/ Jerry, the man behind the teleprompter. – Ryan

Commercial break - hangin w/ Jerry, the man behind the telepr... on TwitPic

And after one of the funniest parts of the show where Ryan took Nate over to Simon:

RyanSeacrest: Meatloaf, headbands and simon, oh my!

I really, really wanted to see Simon wearing that headband!

And given how much press there was about the failed high five with Scott MacIntyre, we thought it was hilarious when Scott went for a high five. Smart move.

RyanSeacrest: Just high fived Scott MacIntyre – FOR REAL THIS TIME!!! If you dont remember, he was the blind contestant with the smooth voice from Phoenix

Ryan has left the building:

RyanSeacrest: on my way off the lot…hit me with your thoughts on Idol tonight. talk to you on the radio tomorrow. – ryan

Wait, Ryan, did you get to pee yet?

I wasn’t blown away by any of the singers tonight. I think my favourites were probably Ju’Not Joyner and Lil Rounds, but I’d be surprised if Scott MacIntyre doesn’t get through. I’m voting for Nathaniel Marshall, just because he’s a funny little thing and I like him.

Now I’m getting a chance to watch the show on TV, I can take a better look at Ryan. He’s looking a less casual than last week’s live show, and he really suits dark shirts. The unbuttoned look is good on him, but I can’t get it out of my head that it’s the Simon Cowell look. It works better on Ryan though. I loved the false start where we were expecting this … is American Idol and he didn’t say it, saying this … is the chance of a lifetime instead. Building anticipation then toying with us, eh.

Ryan asked Simon about the constant criticism of song choices and asked why the judges don’t pick the songs. Simon said he would and they’d have a Simon Cowell week, which seemed to amuse Ryan and incense Kara. I can imagine the other judges having far too much fun saying ‘I wouldn’t have picked that song’ if they went with that! Simon’s picked some really lousy songs for his acts on the X Factor, but I think he’d get most of them right.

I liked Von better this time around — hearing good quality audio makes a big difference with some of the acts. Did Ryan just say “nice one!” to him? I thought that was British slang!

Taylor didn’t sound any better in high quality, but by the time I’d finished laughing at Simon and Kara organising their shopping trip I’d forgotten about her singing, but I loved Ryan’s:

Shopping: Simon, that’s where you can find shirts from this decade; we’re going to take you.

and then shutting Simon down before he could respond.

The chat with Alex was also funny. Ryan asked about Alex reading what people wrote about him on the Internet and said that being dorky can be endearing. Alex joked that he was trying to fill a shirt like Simon (which gave Ryan a free shot at Simon’s age), and said he was hitting the gym. Cute! I’m not sure about Alex and Ryan spotting each other though … Ryan looks as though he’s packing a fair amount of muscle on the shirtless pic that I have as one of my desktop pictures! I want to like him, but he’s trying too hard to sound … I’m not sure, edgier, maybe. ITV2 cut Ryan and the microphone! This is why I have to watch the feed from the states. ITV2!! Stop cutting Ryan!!

Arianna singing Abba was as bad as I remembered. One or two of the changes she made would have been okay, but she totally screwed it over and I’m fairly sure she had no idea at all what the song is about so it had no believability. Ju’Not sounded even better than I remembered and I hope he gets a shot as a recording artist. He was funny talking about the cortisone shot in his butt. America, keeping around someone who babbles when they’re nervous would make great TV … you should think about that when you’re voting. Ryan’s clarification that the shot was for asthma was quite funny too, though I didn’t know LA was smoggy.

Sitting between Kristen and Nathaniel, Ryan looked like he was doing one of those daytime relationships shows. Kristen’s a good singer but I’m not convinced by her. I’d like to see her get a chance though. For me, she’s the sort of artist this kind of show should be able to bring through.

Ryan running over to talk to Nathaniel’s family was so sweet! But so much funnier was when Ryan took Nathaniel over to make Simon uncomfortable. I loved Simon and Ryan’s little fight over the headband and it would have been awesome to see Simon wearing it.

The interview with Felicia was quite boring, just talking about getting the call back. Scott’s was much better, and we enjoyed the bit where he wanted to re stage the high five, offering Ryan a stationary target, as much as the first time we saw it. Scott’s got a nice personality but I don’t rate him much as a singer.

Randy and Kara playing at being Ryan was a great way to remind people just how good Ryan is and how effortless he makes it seem. I liked him sitting behind the desk though. Can you imagine Ryan on the judging panel … he’d have to sit next to Simon. Who’d want to sit between them? (a good number of female viewers, I should think… but you know what I mean). I wasn’t hot for Kendall’s performance. I was with Simon on looking forward to the end, but I’m not a fan of country. I am a fan of Jorge though, but I missed the accent. Has Simon told him to sing in Spanish yet? If he hasn’t, I’m sure it’s coming.
