American Idol 2009: Live Show 2
Wow Ryan’s looking smokin’ hot tonight, even if it is a bit nippy, and I LOVE the hand flourish after his ‘This is American Idol’

I’m starting with predictions as the show just aired here in the UK and the results show goes out in the States in a couple of hours.
Predictions
Tonight’s stand out performance for me was Adam Lambert. He’s genuinely the best by a million miles, even if I did like him before I heard him sing! For the girls I’m torn between Allison Iraheta and Mishavonna Henson.
The ones I think will go through are:
- Adam Lambert
- Allison Iraheta
- Jesse Langseth
And I’d like to see Mishavonna Henson and Matt Giraud in the wildcard show (along with Anoop Desai, Jamar Rogers and Rose Flack, if I’m writing a wish list)
I’m not sure why Ryan even bothers asking the judges for their advice to the contestants — they’re too predictable. I loved that he asked Simon if he was okay with the lighting though. Pot. Kettle. Did I mention that Ryan’s looking good?
Jasmine Murray
She looks great but it’s definitely pitchy and I’m not loving the tone. It was a little better when she hit the chorus, but then she dropped it again. It’s a shame because she looks the part and I love her attitude. She’s out. Randy thought it was pitchy (dude, I already said that), Kara thought it was all over the place, Paula liked her confidence but thought she’d gone off pitch trying to interpret it, and Simon was disappointed because he liked her confidence and attitude. Simon wanted to know why the audience were booing him for saying pretty much the same as the others! Ryan asked her if she’d watched the show last week and voted for anyone, but her answer didn’t do her any favours!
Matt Giraud
Oh no! He sounds really nervous and it’s affecting his voice. I really liked him in Hollywood and wanted him to do well. He looks good but it’s not working and I’m disappointed. If he’s going down the pop route, I’d like to hear him singing something like Faith from George Michael, but he’d have been better sticking with what got him into the live show at this stage. Kara said he’d blown her away in Hollywood but hadn’t tonight and she didn’t think the song lent itself to a bluesey interpretation. Paula had ranked him top notch in Hollywood and thought he’d improved since rehearsal (which doesn’t say much for the rehearsal). Simon thought it was verging on horrible and was put off by him going from cool to wannabe pop star. Poor Simon … the audience are booing again. Randy said he had mad talent and told him to stay away from simple songs. Ryan asked if he deserved a spot in the top 12 and Simon said he didn’t if that’s what he wanted to be.
Jeanine Vailes
I don’t like it from the start, it’s a little sharp and the dancing is weird. If that’s a song she’s comfortable with it doesn’t bode well for more challenging ones. It’s actually bordering on horrible. She looks great though and those legs are impressive. It’s not a good sign when you’re admiring a singer’s legs though. Paula thought she had great legs and passed right over to Simon, who thought it was terrible but thought she had good legs. Randy agreed that the legs were hot, but thought the best part of the performance was the end because it was over. Kara thought it was overdone and everything was wrong. I don’t think we’ll see her back. Ryan asked her what she’d done to prepare her legs for tonight (!), asked Paula if she deserved a shot and said Simon had already had a few (I bet he wished he had!)
Nick Mitchell
His singing is awful but he’s quite funny and his audience interaction is entertaining …. and he’s getting up and personal with the American Idol logo, which is different. If there’s going to be a wacky character in the top 12, I’d rather it’s Normund Gentle than Tatiana del Toro. Simon thought it was one of the most atrocious performances but Randy thought it was one of the most entertaining. Kara and Paula both thought he was memorable but not suited to American Idol and Ryan said that was the first time a contestant had gone to second base with the logo.
Allison Iraheta
She’s off to a bad start with a total lack of personality while Ryan was trying to talk to her but she looks a lot more comfortable once she starts singing. She’s a good looking girl but she pulls weird faces. Parts of it sound a touch off, but overall it’s the best of the girls so far. When she lets the rocky tone comes through it really works. Randy thought she blew it out of the box and Kara said she could have a big hit with the right song but needs to get over the stage fright. Paula said she was the best they’d heard tonight and Simon thought she was boring talking to Ryan but turned into a different person when she started singing. Ryan checked on Allison’s mother who was hiding during the judges’ comments (probably to avoid another awkward conversation with Allison!)
Kris Allen
Not bad, but nothing special. I’d like to hear him sing some Robbie Williams, Angels or Let Me Entertain You. He has a lot of personality when he sings and I think he could pull those off. Kara thought he didn’t show his talent in the performance but Paula thought he’d nailed it. Simon agreed with Paula and got a kiss; Randy partially agreed with Simon but luckily didn’t get a kiss. Ryan asked Kris if he’d relaxed as the song went on, he was happy and Ryan said that’s because he was looking in the mirror :-)
Megan Corkrey
Vocals were patchy, particularly towards the end of the song and she’s a weird dancer. Paula thought she had picked the right song, was beautiful, interesting and relevant. Simon thought she was a funny little thing but said she’d over sung the second part of the song. Randy thought she was relevant and Kara said she’s a package artist. Ryan’s dancing with Megan is so cute though the judges don’t seem to be impressed … Ryan told Paula she should see him do the cold hearted snake, but I think we need to see the video of this!!
Matt Breitzke
The song suits him but I hate it. He’s not bad, but I don’t get him as an artist. Simon liked him but absolutely hated the song. Randy thought the performance needed more edge and Kara said they all liked him but the performance didn’t show any side of him. Paula said he has a good voice and every note was in key but didn’t think the song worked. Matt told Ryan he probably would still have sung that song if they’d tried to talk him out of it.
Jesse Langseth
I love her song choice and it actually works with her voice. I’m not sure about the sweater, but she looks good. Randy thought it was okay but didn’t think she’d shown her range and Kara liked the look and thought there were some moments. Paula had found her captivating with an identifiable sound and unique phrasing but Simon thought she was forgettable.
Kai Kalama
I had nothing to say, and then Simon said there was nothing to say about the performance. I think I agree.
Mishavonna Henson
My favourite girl from the auditions. She’s not blowing me away but I still really like her voice. I think the song suits her and it’s something I’d listen to her singing, but I’m not sure it’s right for this stage of the competition when we don’t know her well. Paula thought she could sing but wasn’t excited by the song and Simon liked the song but said the performance left him cold. Randy wasn’t sure about the song either and Kara wasn’t sure where she’d fit in the music industry.
Adam Lambert
Adam! Adam!! Adam!!! I’m excited. THIS is what I’ve been waiting for.
I LOVE his song choice. He looks like a popstar. I want to go see him in concert already. I want to get out of my seat and rock it, but then I couldn’t type. Ohhh work it baby. He is just awesome. If he’s not final twelve it’s criminal. I can see he wouldn’t be everyone’s taste, but he can definitely sing. Paula’s obviously with me on this! Paula didn’t have the words to express how much she liked him but Simon thought he swung between excruciatingly bad and brilliant. Randy loved it but warned him not to overdo it and Kara said his vocal technique and ability is outrageous. Randy and Ryan compared him to Robert Pattinson/Edward Cullen!
I just about finished the update before watching the Results Show online.
