Ryan looks to be in pretty good shape right now and we asked last week if he is detoxing after Giuliana gave him a cayenne pepper and lemon water that burnt his lips. Looking at his tweets yesterday, it seems the answer to that is ‘no’:

Who’s dream is on the line? It’s time to face the music. This … is American Idol.

The tie bar is back! Ryan’s looking hot, tanned. I am starting to miss the casual look though. Ryan announces the packed show tonight: Ruben Studdard, Smokey Robinson and Joss Stone and Stevie Wonder .. oh, and the results!

Ryan introduces the judges, with a funny ‘three words’ for Kara before asking Paula and her school mate Simon Cowell what was going on between the two of them last night. They were talking about the playground before Ryan said ‘or get a room’, to which Simon replied “we did!”

“What happens when you mix the most talked about singers in the nation with some of the most influential songs in the world?”

“Tonight the music of Motown. This is your top ten …and this is American Idol.”

Ryan’s looking sharp again! And he has such a cute smile in the opening section. He makes me nervous though when he runs down those stairs!

Ryan announces that everyone is over the Influenza B outbreak. No excuses then, let’s hear what they can all do.

There was a really great feel-good story on Ryan’s show this morning. Ryan was sent an email by Bernadette, the coach of an under 10s girls’ soccer team. Her team had been beaten into second place by another under 10s girls’ team, but the other team was unable to progress in the tournament because the winning team’s girls’ families couldn’t afford the trip. Even though her team would go through in their place, Bernadette was looking for help raising funds for the other team.

Ryan has been nominated in Australia for an ASTRA Award in the Subscribers’ Choice Favourite International Personality or Actor category. According to the 7th Annual ASTRA Awards website, the awards ‘recognise the wealth of talent that drives the industry and highlight the creativity, commitment and investment of subscription television in production and broadcasting’.

We’ve just run a ‘quick and dirty’ analysis on the responses in the first couple of hours, and this is what we’re seeing:

How we got the results
We ran a text analysis on the replies to get a count of each mention of the contestants’ names, including variations on spelling and descriptives (‘blind guy’, ‘pink streaks’), adjusted for duplicate names in the same tweet, then ran a sentiment analysis to adjust for those who’d replied saying which contestant they liked rather than which they thought would be eliminated.

I didn’t catch the first few minutes of the show, but unfortunately made it in time to see Michael Sarver, who seems to be the first contestant. I’d heard a rumour that it was country week, and that monstrosity confirmed it. Excuse me while I hit my head on the desk … I make Simon Cowell look like a country fan. Ryan asked Simon if he liked it and he gave it 1.2 on a scale of 1 to 10, which I thought was quite generous. I really don’t get country though, so I’m not qualified to comment at all.

Allison Iraheta didn’t sound quite as bad as Michael, which probably means she was good, and she got good feedback from the judges though Simon had a little dig, calling her precocious and asking if she’d had trouble remembering the words. Ryan asked if she was thinking about the words of the song … or the 30 million people watching.

Ryan’s so dramatic at the start of Idol. Love it! He tells the audience there have been 33 million votes, which is awesome — and another ‘highest at this stage’ record.

Ryan didn’t spend too long introducing the judges, instead explaining the twist — the judges’ save. For the first time, the judges have the power to overrule the vote and give the contestant with the least number of votes another chance. The catch is they can only do it once during the season and it has to be a unanimous decision. The week they call the save, nobody will go home, but the following week will be a double elimination.

The show starts with a new opening that’s a lot like the X Factor with the judges making a big entrance. Ryan’s looking hot again, and I love the tie! Ryan says “you’re loving that!” to Simon and comments on him actually walking.

The stage is understated, as usual, and Ryan asks the judges for their opening comments … which results in bickering. Great!

Alexis Grace is in the pimp spot, and talking of pimps … wondering what’s happening with the x-rated number thirteen?

Simon reveals that two contestants are going home tomorrow, which he thinks is a good thing as it will put more pressure on them. He’s all heart!

Tonight from the Independent Group of Newspapers in South Africa is reporting that On Air with Ryan Seacrest will air on 94.7 Highveld in Johannesburg, South Africa starting today. This will be Ryan’s first broadcast in the southern hemisphere.

94.7 station manager, Ravi Naidoo explained the reason for choosing Ryan as their first pre-packaged show:

Ryan is synonymous with celebrity news and our listener research has revealed that our audience is hungry to hear the latest gossip. So as opposed to us just dishing out the dirt, we thought it would be better for listeners to get it straight from the horse’s mouth.

The show will also air in Cape Town in the near future.

Another step towards world domination! Ryan’s show already airs in Singapore as well as across the United States and Canada. Ryan, what about the UK? You need to conquer Europe too, and what better place than Simon’s back yard!

Radaronline is reporting that Ryan was spotted at Madeo Ristorante on Saturday night with a group of six people that included two older couples and a young brunette.

The article quotes someone who was there who said that the young brunette “didn’t look like his date”, and as we know from Friday’s show that Ryan’s mom, dad, nan and a friend are visiting this weekend, we’d guess that the mystery woman may be Ryan’s sister Meredith. It sounds like she’s in the area as she was at KIIS for the 5th anniversary celebrations and Ryan said recently she had been leaving women’s magazines around his house … that’s his excuse for reading them, anyway!

Either that, or he’s taken Ellen K’s advice and taken Kourtney Kardashian to start making wedding plans with his family ;-)

On the 5 year anniversary at KIIS, Team Seacrest revealed that Ryan does push ups during his morning radio show. Looking at this video from the Kardashian’s visit to Ryan’s studio, he doesn’t restrict himself to push ups for a little extra work out while the music’s playing. Whatever he’s doing, it’s working!

But now we’re intrigued: what else does he have hidden under that desk?

THIS is American Idol, and THIS is Ryan Seacrest looking very, very sharp! I love the slightly-loose tie even though part of me wants to reach right into the TV screen and straighten it.

Simon gets a warm reception (they’ll probably turn on him as soon as he says something honest), but doesn’t seem to get the same level of hysteria on American Idol as he does on The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent. Maybe it’s because the audience is still quite small.

It looks for a second as if Ryan’s going to join in with the group song! The contestants are singing Katy Perry’s Hot ‘n’ Cold, which is an awesome song, but their version is mostly cold. Really not loving this. Ryan runs through a recap of yesterday’s show, including a rerun of his explanation of shopping for Simon and his high five with Scott.

The stand out performance on this show was Ryan. He had us in stitches the whole show and we were hitting refresh on our Twitter accounts every time there was a commercial break in case he’d tweeted some more.

I’m starting with predictions as the show just aired here in the UK and the results show goes out in the States in a couple of hours.

Predictions

Tonight’s stand out performance for me was Adam Lambert. He’s genuinely the best by a million miles, even if I did like him before I heard him sing! For the girls I’m torn between Allison Iraheta and Mishavonna Henson.

The ones I think will go through are:

• Jesse Langseth

And I’d like to see Mishavonna Henson and Matt Giraud in the wildcard show (along with Anoop Desai, Jamar Rogers and Rose Flack, if I’m writing a wish list)

Before the show started, Ryan posted to twitter:

Sure enough, when the show started he told Simon that he and Randy had been talking about how they couldn’t help but be in awe of how brilliant he is this year. He totally had Simon flustered, and Simon had no witty comeback and ended up saying can we have a little bit less about me and more about the show. This was such an awesome use of Twitter from Ryan … I bet a few followers tuned in just to see if he’d do it.

Group 2 sang Ne-Yo’s Closer for the show opener and did a pretty good job with it. I think Group 2 is much, much stronger than Group 1 and there are several contestants I think deserve to go through. Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta must be dead certs, but the third one is much more difficult to call.

Ryan looked amazing in the results show. I’m really loving his look this season. I like the cute sweaters but the unbuttoned shirt with jacket is really working and jeans always get my vote. I think that’s the best he’s looked so far in season 8 (with the Grand Canyon intro a close second).

Ryan seemed very bouncy which is amazing considering the hours he’s working at the moment. Why was Randy Jackson booing Simon during the introductions? And then when Kara was talking about people who had disappointed the previous night, Randy threw in ‘Simon’, which set Kara and Paula off saying Simon had disappointed too:
