American Idol 2009: Results Show 2
Before the show started, Ryan posted to twitter:
ryanseacrest: bout to go on the air at Idol…gonna ask Simon sarcastically why he’s so brilliant. – Ryan
Sure enough, when the show started he told Simon that he and Randy had been talking about how they couldn’t help but be in awe of how brilliant he is this year. He totally had Simon flustered, and Simon had no witty comeback and ended up saying can we have a little bit less about me and more about the show. This was such an awesome use of Twitter from Ryan … I bet a few followers tuned in just to see if he’d do it.
Group 2 sang Ne-Yo’s Closer for the show opener and did a pretty good job with it. I think Group 2 is much, much stronger than Group 1 and there are several contestants I think deserve to go through. Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta must be dead certs, but the third one is much more difficult to call.
More Twitter from Ryan during the show:
ryanseacrest: Prob shouldn’t be twittering during commercial breaks…but you should know it took 8 guys to get that piano off the stage at idol. – Ryan
Ryan, you definitely should be twittering during the breaks! Love it.
ryanseacrest: Idols over, crews packin up, im outta here – west coast: tune in tonight, good show
I loved the opening with Ryan looking at Nick as he said “what have you done?” Is he trying to scare us? Ryan’s gone from über-casual to casual-smart tonight and he’s tucked the nips away from view so we can’t judge the temperature. The blue shirt is definitely working, but if he opens any more buttons we’ll start to think he’s taking styling tips from Simon.
After a run through the highlights from yesterday, Ryan asked Nick Mitchell what we could expect from him if he didn’t make it through — he’s always looking for employment!
Next he asked Matt Breitzke about Simon’s face after he spoke back to him, and if he had any regrets about that? Matt said that Simon had said it was too late for advice and said he didn’t know if there would ever be a time in his life when it’s going to be too late for advice. This is the same Matt Breitzke who said he probably wouldn’t have listened if Simon had tried to talk him out of singing that song? Ryan asked Simon to respond, so he said “it’s too late!” (predictable but still amusing) and shot down Ryan’s suggestion of animosity between the two of them.
Ryan asked Jesse Langseth about song choice. She thought it was tough, but was sure she’d picked the right song. I loved her song. Jeanine Vailes said she’d over-compensated yesterday but Ryan noticed that she was still showing the same amount of leg!
Ryan called Allison Iraheta, Jesse Langseth and Matt Breitzke down to the centre stage and didn’t string it out too much before announcing Allison was through, then told her not to get too comfortable because she had to sing again.
Kris Allen and Megan Corkrey were next to come forward. Kris hadn’t watched his performance back and was ‘really freaking nervous’. Matt Giraud and Jeanine Vailes were summoned down by Ryan to join them. He said Jeanine was subdued, then said one of the four was going into the top twelve. It’s probably between Matt and Kris, but I wouldn’t be confident ruling out Megan either because she’s quite quirky. Paula called Simon a gnat for being a broken record telling her to answer the question while she was hedging her bets on which of Matt, Kris and Megan would go through then Ryan dismissed Jeanine and Matt — I hope Matt Giraud gets another shot in the wildcard round. Ryan then asked Kara if she was hard on Kris last night and Simon was doing his best to wind her up while she was droning on and on and Ryan asked Simon why he was shaking his head, then decided to shut them both up before announcing that Kris Allen was through. Kris is much cuter than I remember and I guess that didn’t hurt his chances. I like his personality too, but I’m still not liking this song much.
So it’s Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta and Kris Allen through to the top 12. Not too bad!
Ryan invited the last five candidates down to the centre stage, but we know it’s Adam (I’m not prepared to consider any alternative, though I do wonder if America is ready for an openly-gay Idol). Ryan asked Mischavonna if she’d done enough, but she said it obviously wasn’t the right song because the judges didn’t like it. He asked Kai if he had any regrets, but he was hoping America liked him enough. No chance. Ryan walked past Nick and Adam and spoke to Jasmine before dismissing the three of them leaving him with the three on stage. For a second I put it down to Ryan’s arithmetic, but the he said the remaining three were Nick, Normund and Adam. Doh! He asked if Simon really had gone home and prayed last night … Simon had spent five or six hours praying and said he hoped he had a good relationship with god right now. The feed from the States cut to a break at this point but ITV2 is much kinder, going straight into the result and Adam is through and gracious towards Nick. I need to get a still of Adam and Ryan. They make a pretty picture together. Ha! Ryan looks as though his shirt is opening more at the neck. Maybe Simon wasn’t so far out with that ‘single white female’ remark last week ;-)
