Live from the Red Carpet: Ryan at the Grammy Awards
Ryan was on the red carpet interviewing stars arriving for the Grammys, looking great in an open-necked shirt and stubble. He does look good in a suit, but it definitely works for him to mix it up a little more casual too.
Ryan asked Paula Abdul, who was wearing a fabulously-yellow dress, about her date with Simon Cowell and which of the American Idol hosts she has had a dream about being in bed with. Paula denied dreams of Randy and Simon, but had already shared a bed with Kara and humoured Ryan saying she’d dreamed about him. Ryan got Flo Rida to tell a story about causing a bomb scare and quizzed Ne-Yo’s date on Ne-Yo's kissing skills and breath freshness. As Leona Lewis approached, Ryan started singing ‘Bleeding Love’, but it was more like bleeding eardrums. Ouch, Ryan!
He then tried to take off LL Cool J’s glasses checking for crow’s feet, but he wasn’t having any of it, and talked to Neil Portnow, who said he had LL Cool J’s crow’s feet. Miley Cyrus at 5’4” was wearing heels that made her almost as tall as Ryan but Taylor Swift, who’s 5’11” towered over them both.
Ryan gave a guided tour of the red carpet and out to the arrival and security area before talking to American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, who also towers over Ryan. What are they feeding the girls in that town! They talked about No Air, Chris Brown and Rihanna, with Ryan calling him a ‘class act’ and Jordin calling him ‘cool’ before the news about the altercation broke. Continuing the Idol theme, Ryan interviewed Carrie Underwood about her dating habits, though he didn’t seem to be looking at her face. Katy Perry gave Ryan a lock of Taylor Swift's hair out of her purse and they discussed her set where she’d be dropping from something that Ryan described as "it's phallic and you can put it into a protein shake". Sounds ... fruity. Fantasia, another Idol alumna, talked to Ryan about Jennifer Hudson and denied that Simon Cowell had paid for her house. Ryan sure likes to talk about Simon Cowell! We like Ryan to talk about Simon Cowell, so that’s good.
John Mayer was the next to tower over Ryan. Ryan asked him about writing about the recession, but John Mayer didn’t seem to have an answer to that. I think Ryan needs to cut this conversation short before he gets a crick in his neck!
Kate Beckinsale talked about falling in love Coldplay and being Freddie Mercury. There seem to be a lot of Brits at the Grammys as well as all the Idol alumnae ... talking of which, Jennifer Hudson arrived and Ryan asked her about singing at the Super Bowl and called her fiancé ‘baby’, which was very funny. T.I. explained that a song like ‘Whatever you like’ is aspirational but didn’t really want to talk about his imminent jail term for possession of firearms. Paris Hilton was looking pretty good and had one of the best lines of the night, answering “don’t bring sand to the beach” when Ryan asked her why she hadn’t brought a guy. At the end of the show, Ryan disappeared into the back of a car for a glass of bubbly with Quincy Jones, then went looking for Coldplay but found ex-Idol contestant Michael Johns instead.
