American Idol 2009 Week 3 Program 2: New York City
The opening montage showed Ryan ready to ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange and focussed on the self-confidence of the New Yorkers. If I remember correctly, there’s an episode relating to this visit to the Stock Exchange on the On Air with Ryan Seacrest podcast.
New York City Auditions
The first auditionee, Adeola Adegoke, compared herself to Mariah Carey and had quit her job because she was so confident that she would get through. Unfortunately her audition was one of the worst we’ve heard, but Simon called her former boss and got her job back. Melinda Camille wanted to uplift humanity by dancing naked … unfortunately for Randy, Simon and Ryan, not in the audition room. She got through to the next round with a nice but not special performance.
Ryan’s dancing in the holding room was clearly the highlight of this show. He actually looks like he would have the moves on the dance floor.
Jackie Tohn got a ‘yes’ from all four judges, and some advice from Simon that she should know who she is as an artist rather than ask other people who she should be. Kate Cassidy had a lot of ‘energy’ but not a lot of tune, Antyon Smith had limbs flying everywhere, except in the direction of a golden ticket, and Jasmine James played pat-a-cake. The comics were out too, with Mike Perlman playing his radio and Nick Mitchell, aka Norman Gentle, taking a shot at Ryan and Simon after getting a bit of criticism.
Nick: “You hurt me where you get kicked sometimes. That was very hard.”
Simon: “I would have thought you’d have quite liked that!”
Nick: “You mean the way you like it when Seacrest does it?”
After getting a laugh out of the judges, Nick got through to the next round, but probably won’t get any further. Ashley Hollister and Kenny Hoffpauer got through on the strength of their singing, but Nicole Larawa, Mark Granata and Michael Sconiers didn’t have what it takes. Angry New Yorker Alexis Cohen had chilled out and turned to Buddhism since her last audition, but her new attitude didn’t last beyond getting a ‘no’ from the judges and she left with fingers blazing once again. Absolutely loved the expression on the face of the guy at the end of her clip in the holding room. She’s one strange cookie.
26 contestants from New York City went through to the next round.
Ryan wore a black shirt and taupe trousers and a dark blue polo shirt (?) with white and red stripes, with black trousers and white shoes. The black shirt looked great, but the polo shirt didn’t flatter him at all. Not 100% sure it was a polo shirt as I have only been able to watch online so far! Damn that low resolution video, I need to know these things …
